Where do you buy your clothes?
Discussion
Thank you and yeah I didn't realise Arket were part of H&M until I looked (same with COS).
Interesting how that carefully cultivated Scandinavian image still ends up with jumpers from the "SUZHOU WANLI KNITTING CO., LTD." and polos from "SHANGHAI JINGQINGRONG GARMENT CO., LTD.".
Probably makes me sound like some massive snob but it's been a bit of a learning exercise

Well that was unexpected.
On my second Sunspel order that had the extra 10% off I put on the order feedback questionnaire very politely that whilst the extra 10% off was welcome it was slightly frustrating as I would have waited before ordering.
Just got an email from Sunspel and 10% of the cost of the first order has been refunded.
That's the kind of thing that might encourage me to use a company again

Well if anyone is interested after about as much homework as is sensibly possible I just ordered a bunch of stuff from Asket.
Hopefully the reviews I've read plus a podcast with the owners are right and this is good quality stuff made to laugh at sensible prices.
It's been an interesting dilemma as their items are very plain no logos or anything on show and it take a bit of getting used to not buying a "known brand" got to love marketing departments
There's a weird bit of psychology at play where a hoodie from pretty much any sporting/casual brand is £50 or so and you don't question it but a £100 one made in the EU using fully traceable materials and labour feels "expensive".
Oh and if anyone ever ends up here the magic words to Google are "capsule wardrobe".

I have quite a few pairs of shoes as I used to have a half day off and go around the factory shops around Northampton.
They're all traditional Derby and Oxford though.
I could do with a pair of nice "sneakers".
Crown Northampton look nice but it's already been an expensive month and they look like everything is made to order so a three month wait.

Yeah they probably would be at that price. £170 is very cheap these days for good quality leather white sneakers.
Loake seem to make their cheaper lines in india and more expensive ones here.
I see you finally ordered from Asket, I’ve a fair bit of their stuff which has always been far better than M&S (I.e for t shirts, knitwear etc). Will be interested to hear how you get on.
I’ve also just put an order in on Paul James Knitwear, for some chunkier stuff than Asket sell. Will update the thread with feedback in due course.
Also whilst I’ve not kept any of it due to fit, Mr Porter have a massive sale on including some big reductions on their Mr P own brand knitwear.
The Asket stuff should be here tomorrow as I figured when I'm spending that much what's a little more for express delivery.Loake seem to make their cheaper lines in india and more expensive ones here.

The "funny" thing is I've long subscribed to the Vimes "Boots Theory" with shoes but never quite applied it to clothes as in I never really considered whether I was paying for actual quality or a perceived quality brand.
I will do a little digging into sneakers as I could do with at least one pair of "smart" white ones that can be worn with jeans or chinos and that don't make me look like I'm wearing pontoons.
Suspect there will be a lot of sale offers so perhaps that's one for Christmas week - one "nice" thing about buying the Sunspel and Asket stuff was I benefited from the Sunspel sale prices and hopefully I'm not about to wake up and find 50% off everything at Asket.
The Asket stuff arrived.
Couple of sweaters and hoodies.
They seem good quality but truth be told I imagine I'd be saying that with pretty much anything brand new and still in the packaging.
The hoodies are a clear step up from £15 Gildan ones which you'd hope they should be and I don't know enough about knitwear to really judge.
Seems like bloody nice stuff though

Just ordered a pair of Superga sneakers for £40 in the sales which seems a decent buy assuming they're as plain as they look.
It's also cheap enough to decide whether I get on with "smarter" sneakers in which case I'll look at something a bit smarter.
Any suggestions for chinos please?
Tons of choice same old thing of actual quality v the designer label slapped on them in the factory in Cambodia etc.

Yeah I could have worded that better it sounded a bit snobby
It's more that once you start to look a little beyond the names you know it's interesting how you can get something fully traceable and made in Europe without necessarily paying much more than you would for something that feels a lot more mass market.
Trousers made in Italy by Italians from Italian fabric v "not sure where until they turn up but they have a Boss/Gant/whatever" logo on them etc.
Fewer hopefully better pieces rather than a rail full of brands etc.
I know what I'm trying to say even if I'm doing a very bad job of saying it

Quality over quantity and substance over superficiality?
Something like that yes.Put it this way I mentioned trousers and if I look at these.
The Chino
I'm much more minded to think they are worth the money than I am these.
Stretch Slim Fit Knitlike Chino Trouser
But I genuinely couldn't tell you whether I'm falling for slick marketing or whether the person who buys the Ralph Lauren (or similar designer brand) is
Well after a bit (ok a lot) of procrastination I've treated myself to some Luca Faloni chinos.
With a discount code they aren't much more expensive than stuff like Reiss or Gant so fingers crossed they're decent quality.
Bit of a toss up between them and Asket but Asket haven't had stock showing since before Christmas which kind of decided it.

Compare Mark with your basic millionaire. If they’re paying £410, he’s paying the equivalent of 1/2p. Something would have to be £1m or more to even register.
Meanwhile, I’ve just put in an order for some Asket T-shirts. Hope they’re as good as they say.

I'd like to think if I was in his shoes I wouldn't spend that much but it literally wouldn't even register would it the scales are so skewed relative to the average person.

Anyone tried this brand:

Apparently, Mark Zuckerberg gets their grey T shirts linked about. Bargain at £410 a pop.
Thing is stuff like illustrates perfectly what I was trying and perhaps failing to get across.https://shop.brunellocucinelli.com/en-gb/men/ready...

It's a tee shirt at £410.
There will be more expensive ones available.
Is there anything about it in quality and construction terms that justifies that price or is it quite literally the tag that's in it and the associated costs?
Carefully
I think the more serious answer is carefully and in a mesh wash bag.
I don't mind admitting I've bought one for my new stuff which is council compared to stuff like Loro Piana.
The Luca Faloni chinos have arrived today and whilst I don't tend to go around feeling peoples trousers all I do know is these things feel absolutely fking lovely and a step up from anything similar that I've had in the past.

This is not something I've heard of. What is it and what's the point?
Quick google suggests anything that says "wash by hand" can be done in the machine if you use a bag? Is that correct?
If I say it's a mesh bag that you put things in when you wash them I'll sound sarcastic won't I Quick google suggests anything that says "wash by hand" can be done in the machine if you use a bag? Is that correct?
But it's exactly that.
The idea looks to be that bag gets tossed around the washing machine whilst the clothes inside are hopefully kept a little bit safer.
This kind of thing.

I don't think it gets around the basic physics that if you wash something that shouldn't be washed or spin something that shouldn't be spun putting it in one of those won't prevent it getting damaged or ruined.
