The wife and I went to subway at lunch and every other couple there simply ordered a footlong which they were clearly going to share when they got out the shop.

Ordering two 6 inchers means that they get 'processed' seperately. More time overhead.
Otherwise they would have a "buy two 6inch for the price of a 12inch" deal, or some such. But they don't.
Ordering 'two smalls' is not going to be the price of 'one large' (a large being about twice the size).

They still refused to change the price. Couldn't believe it.

I'm starting the book now on the OP starting a thread in about a week or so about how he's been dumped by his girlfriend because he's 'apparently' a tight, whinging idiot...
