My eldest son is a hairdresser. He was working on a futuristic post apocalyptic style recently and was seeking some shotgun shells to use as rollers with hair pins. These would have been awesome, the results practically hair-raising.

I did that once when I was young and stupid. I emptied the shot and gunpowder out first and still ended up having to remove bits of metal from a finger.

Open up the crimp to get the shot out. Pull the wad out and empty the powder, just make a thin 'snail trail' with it all. Light that with a blowtorch. It burns with right "whoosh" so keep a distance, wear a heat proof glove and don't be above it or you'll look like Emsman (spelling?). As for the caps, just spray some WD40 in there, let it soak and then tip them up. Bin 'em then.

When I was a lad in Somerset, a mate and I used to climb onto the roof of his house and drop live shotgun shells down the chimmney and onto the fire.

His mum got a bit pissed off (I have no idea why) and asked us to desist.

Was fun while it lasted.

I know (hope) that some of these suggestions are in jest, but just to be the responsible adult for once:

If you do anything that results in these firing and get caught, you can be in serious trouble. Not to mention the damage you can do to yourself/others.

As far as I know (someone will correct me if I'm wrong) it's not illegal to possess shotgun shells, although it is illegal to buy them without a licence.

I really think taking them to the police is overkill to be honest, slice em and bin em!

What a load of bks.

The police have special bomb proof boxes to store this kind of thing when it's handed in. To be sure I'd phone them up and tell them what you have and how you came to be in possession. They will then let you know whether they would like you to bring them in or if they would prefer to collect them. In the mean time I'd store them in a metal container in either the shed or the garage.
