Dodging Rounds
Discussion
I find this a very interesting thread, have known a couple of people like this in my life, but not for long.
To give some balance, if I go to a mate's house for a chinese, then they will pay. What will happen however is I will offer to pay half. And this will be refused. When they come to our place the situation will be reversed with us paying for the meal and them offering to pay half. This is what I consider normal - if you invite people over to your place for a meal then you are paying for it whether you cook or get a takeaway.

Bloody hell some of the people described in this thread are genuinely unbelievable. The closest I've been to this was a group meal for a birthday and one person didn't want to split the bill because she'd only had one slice of bread and everyone else had had more, plus she'd opted out of paying for the Birthday girl's share as a group because she'd had dessert as well.
Swiftly got told to shut the fk up or work out what each slice of bread cost as a fraction of the total bill so she only had to pay her share. Was almost in tears by the end of it all because it was so 'unfair.' Unsurprisingly she's never been invited out to any more group activities.
she sounds annoying but i tend to think making her pay £30 for a slice of bread might not be that great either.Swiftly got told to shut the fk up or work out what each slice of bread cost as a fraction of the total bill so she only had to pay her share. Assuming I had already bought the birthday girl something already....

It would have to be that otherwise being told to shell out +£25 for a single slice of bread should've resulted in someone else entirely being told to "shut the fk up"!

stuff about giving lifts
Had a mate that, knowing full well in advance it would be awkward for him to get into town to meet up, used to ask for a lift about an hour before we were due to meet.Bit stupid/forgetful but the real kicker was it would be +12 mile round trip.
That's taking the piss, right?
What is far worse is what happened to me years ago , 3 couples out for a bite to eat bill came to £230 including the tip , I counted off 4 twenty pound notes and said to the others you put £75 in each which I was happy with.
Except when the money was counted there was only £210 in total , I piped up telling the others I'd put the four twenties in so it wasn't me who was shy. Cue a really embarrassing silence , I ended up putting the other £20 in just to get out of the place
Never went out with the offending couple again , tried to rip off one of the gang for fking twenty quid , it was mentioned when out with part of our wider circle and apparently it was something he'd pulled before.
Never spoke to him or his wife since although do see them occasionally.

I really hate it when that happens, I don't like being accused of something I haven't done so feel like people might think it's me that's not put the right amount in.Except when the money was counted there was only £210 in total , I piped up telling the others I'd put the four twenties in so it wasn't me who was shy. I avoid being in rounds simply because I can't/don't drink very much. I just let everyone get on with the rounds and buy my own. If I was in a round I would just end up with a heap of drinks still in front of me.
Everyone who knows me is fine with this as they know I'm not a big drinker.
If I'm out with a load of people I don't know for work or whatever and rounds are started I'll just go with it and accept the fact that I won't be able to drink my money's worth that I've put in
It's the same when people do a 'kitty' and everyone puts £X in to buy the drinks all night. It's pointless for me as I'll just end up putting my £50 in or whatever and then consuming £20-30 worth of beers.
Restaurant bills are a different matter though. I'll always happily pay an equal share irrespective of what anyone has had to eat or drink.

i always assume it's a mistake when that happens. If I thought someone I knew and liked did this on purpose I'd be devastated!
The end result was I put in £100 , one put in £75 as agreed and the other put in £55 , my glass is always half full I now look on it as £45 well spent.Blown2CV said:

I think I've told this story before, but a mate of mine used to basically rob us every time we were all out as a group for a meal.He would always make sure he was the last one to put his money in and hand it to the waiter. We eventually found out what he was doing, which was to count up the cash in the pot, and because everyone had put their share in plus a couple of quid tip or just rounded up etc, he would realise that the amount already in there almost covered the full bill, so he would only put £6 in of his own money instead of the £30 each for example.
He would basically ensure that the cash we left for the restaurant was the exact amount with no tip. Everyone else in our group was funding his meals out!
It probably went on for a couple of years or so until another mate got suspicious and counted up the cash again just before he was about to hand it in and worked out what was happening.

I was out with some mates in Suvv'ampton on Fri night. I noticed that one chap would drink draught pints when it was his round, then ask for some (more expensive) craft beer or bottled beer when everyone else was paying. It's a bit cheeky. One mate was driving as he had to drive home north of Salisbury, so we gave him a free pass.
When I'm out with mates at home, however, we usually end up over-tipping the waiting staff when, for example, it'll be €30 ea. and everyone chucks in 2 x €20 and "doesn't want change"! It's been good for us as a group though as we get treated very well the next time we go to the same place!

I have one mate who will sneakily avoid the odd round but he isnt on mega money so we humiliate him for a bit afterwards but then shrug it off. We know that he wouldnt be able to be out at all some nights if we didnt chip in a bit more.
My fiancé's friends are awful for it though, in particular one of them.
I went for a meal with her and 3 of her mates when we first met and the bill ended up in front of me. I opened it up, took the balance and divided it by 5 to get individual amounts imcluding a small tip. One of them piped up that she only had this and that and worked it out exact. Her figure was only a fiver different from the equal split, and she didnt throw in any tip which would have brought it down to about a £2 difference.
I refer to her as leach even to this day. The amount of wine she scrounges off the group on nights out or whilst round at ours is unreal. I have to put up with leach as she is a bridesmaid at our wedding.
Hope you're telling her to pay for her own bridesmaid's dress, shoes etc., after all it will be her dress, shoes... My fiancé's friends are awful for it though, in particular one of them.

you still see this person or no?
Not very often. Usually at friends weddings and suchlike. He got called out on it big time when he was found out, but he has always been such a massive cheapskate that in all honesty we just let it go provided that he didn't do it again.
He's the sort that would always jump in a taxi with you and get dropped off first and not leave you any money. I remember one Christmas party he came to, he arrived carrying a bottle of vodka, and left at the end carrying his full bottle of vodka having been drinking all night... other people's drinks.
