The official winter rain, wind, snow and ice thread 2023/24
Discussion
This has got to be one of the worst weather starts to a year in the UK in a very long time. It's endless. I rarely leave the house in the week as after work it's almost always raining and has been for months. In previous years I've been out every day and rarely actually had to use waterproofs and that's for several years.

Turned out to be quite a pleasant day in Aberdeenshire - light winds and some decent sunshine so decided to take advantage of the extra daylight and get the BBQ fired up.
If the forecast is right I should get out on the XC skis tomorrow evening!
Indeed! Look like we could be in for a covering early tomorrow If the forecast is right I should get out on the XC skis tomorrow evening!

It’s now up to five days without rain this year in my part of Surrey.
Yea.
It's all down here in Devon. Yea.
Absolutely minging this evening - cloud base in the tree-tops, alternating stifling drizzle and pelting rain. Dog took one look out the back door when I was taking her out for a walk, turned round and was headed back to her bed - took some coaxing to get her out and into the car. On the plus side we had a significant chunk of the Grand Western Canal to ourselves, as nobody else was stupid enough to be out of a walk. Sunset apparently at 19:51 but it felt like it was getting dark a *long* time before that.
So the Peak District trip i was looking forward to kick starting the holidays this year....
Arrived Tuesday, amazingly in the dry. Caravan set up and here for about 2hrs then the heavens opened and I think we've had about 6hrs since then where it hasn't rained. Managed to get out on the bikes through it and just get on with it with wet weather clothing but 7-8 degrees in the wet is definitely character building for the kids!
The ground was absolutely saturated on the grass when we arrived, but now we've got ducks bathing on it! We were due to stay until Saturday but with the gales expected on Saturday, I might just give up and come back tomorrow evening.

I've got a raised bed to finish off this weekend and I think i'll be doing it whatever the weather, two fingers to the rain, not putting everything on hold any longer.
Glad I snuck in a mow of the grass about 4 weeks ago as it's not stopped raining since.
Depends where you are, but the south east will be dry, warm (!) and blustery. Glad I snuck in a mow of the grass about 4 weeks ago as it's not stopped raining since.
Woke up early and disappointed as the snow hadn’t arrived.
An hour and a half later and our roofs are white. The bright cherry blossom looks very pretty with the snow falling in front of it. Sure it’ll be gone by the morn’ .
Much prefer snow to rain, even if it leaves the same soggy mess afterwards.

All of this just makes me more bemused when I see and hear people say I quite like the UK weather... and go on to say why.
I can see why it being mild most of the time is good, but the rain, the miserable darkness, the unpredicability is just bulls

I'm one of those people. I genuinely hate strong sunshine and heat. Can't bear it. I put up with it on holidays for the sake of the wife, who loves it. What I struggle with is how people work, even doing desk based office jobs, in heat. I just can't do it. I also hate the biting insects which come with warmer climes, I'm one of those people who gets bitten to death and it's hugely uncomfortable, especially when trying to sleep.I can see why it being mild most of the time is good, but the rain, the miserable darkness, the unpredicability is just bulls

Believe it or not I'm half Maltese and a Maltese national. I don't go there much after about April, and then not until October again. Torture. I love it there in Jan/Feb though - I've been eyeing up decent looking Air BnB's on Gozo which can go for as little as £300 a month in Jan/Feb. Bargain. You'll be less surprised to hear that I'm half Scottish on the other side, blue skinned and ginger, and blimey, do I prefer the climate of that side of my heritage over the other!
My perfect climate is that of the Vendee in France. More sunshine hours than anywhere else in France, but seldom over about 25 deg C on the coast, even in summer. Beautiful place for me.
