It's a new one on me TBH. Killing Kittens is a sex club - I was struggling to see the link.

I had thought so. But I just googled it and it's far less prevalent than I thought and so maybe it is a PH thing after all, which surprises me.

I've been using the phrase for decades so maybe I have forgotten where it came from.

The full phrase is "Jokes are like kittens; if you try to dissect them then they stop working" (or variations thereof) and we now allude to it by making reference to harming / killing kittens.

"Explaining humor is a lot like dissecting a frog, you learn a lot in the process, but in the end you kill it."

Mark Twain

There are quite a few versions with "original" quotes having been variously attributed to Mark Twain, EB White, and Barry Crier among others. I'd guess that Barry being the eldest of these three wink , he was probably the originator.
I don't know when it made the leap from frogs to kittens, maybe that's a PH thing?

Also said as, explaining a joke is like dissecting a kitten, it just ruins it.

I've known that saying since I was a wee lad and that was quite a while ago. Likely predates me as well.

Oh, I know why it is kittens. It comes from the internet meme "Every time you <a thing>, God kills a kitten". I think it may originally come from "Every time you masturbate, God kills a kitten". Maybe the two memes got smashed together.

Not just programmers. It's the same with any even semi-technical role in IT.
