Is it possible to make a smartphone work so hard that even whilst connected to the mains the battery drains?

Mine will actually do that now, but it's kind of broken. I used to use my old iPhone4 as a sat-nav device and it would drain the battery even if connected to the lighter port (1 amp socket I think rather than 5 amp).
I think you've answered your own question. I've had similar using Satnav and also while playing some games with good 3d graphics.
A bad battery can lead to this. I have an old tablet that gets used for a couple of hours a day, and lives plugged in. While using it though the battery starts to drain, and then requires overnight for a rest to get back to 100%. I would have thought it's down to the battery charge rate being slower than the usage rate as the power goes through the battery rather than some kind of direct changeover.

I don't know is the answer to your question.

BUT. In my old car, I would be using the SatNav on my iPhone 6 Plus whilst it was plugged into the USB port for power. The cars USB port couldn't supply enough power to the phone than it was consuming. The phone would last longer whilst on charge but eventually die even though it had power.

In my new car with the same phone, this isn't a problem!

100% right.
Walkers should have a word with themselves.
Glad I'm not the only one! It does my head in!!

About the phone using too much power....

Well the device will have a limit on how much charge it can take, an average charger gives out 1000mA, if your device has a 2000mA battery, then the device would have to use over 1000mA to to both deplete the battery and exceed the charge of the charger...

When the cricket is on I usually listen to Test Match special on Radio iPlayer on the phone, but if I'm downstairs then connect with Bluetooth back to the TV sound bar and play it that way rather than through the phone tiny speakers. If the phone battery is OK sitting it on the TV cabinet which also houses the WiFi router and the battery runs all day. However if the battery is low the charger sits diametrically opposite router and sound bar on the ground floor with quite a few walls and furniture in the way.

Now whilst it's just a generic USB charger from IKEA, it does charge the battery in this state, presumably because it has to up the effort because of signal strength, the battery charge increases slowly. I'm sure that if I also started some serious surfing or played a game while the radio played in the background then it wouldn't keep up, but to be fair haven't tried this.

Switch on NFC and see how long your battery lasts.......
It used to kill my ( ok, now four years ago) Xperia S in about two hours.

Iceland do frozen chicken breasts that you cook from frozen. I've always been told never to cook chicken from frozen as it'll make you bad. How's that work then?

It's probably whole chicken you were advised about, thaw first to ensure it's cooked all the way through, quite feasible to have nice 50 deg bacteria encouraging temperatures on the inside whilst the outer flesh is just right to eat.

60 million turds flushed daily so what becomes of them in the UK? Settlement ponds deal with the liquid by overflowing them into waterways but there must be solids to deal with surely or do they just dissolve. Question prompted as the disgusting odour from Stirling's sewage works assailed my nostrils this evening as I drove past the River Forth.
They get eaten by bacteria.

So assuming it's the Mississippi, it's about 130.

Watching an ad on TV for the AA, it said "If you lose your car key, they will cut you another", and it shows a key cutting machine cutting a key.

How can they do that if you don't have a key? Is there a magic web site they log into to programme a key cutting g machine?
