I see one little but crucial mistake the OP made, What you should have done, if you wanted to be charged for a footlong, is ORDER A FOOTLONG then ASK THE STAFF POLITELY TO CUT THE SANDWICH IN HALF AS YOU INTEND TO SHARE IT

If you want different fillings or extras, then you pay the extra cost.
