Except they're not, because of shirt sales, worldwide marketing, tv money, success on the field and prize money, etc. etc. Good players and success on the field lead to all those.
Not sure there will much of that this season I think it's purely a commercial decision. They will sell loads of shirts, loads of sponsorship deals, he's England's main man, possible united captain, always in the cover of the latest FIFA, Nike, etc
I'd rather him playing for us instead if against, and i think we're paying him to stay rather than to play football.
I don't think he deserves to be captain or break sir Bobby's record.

How many bankers do you think earn bonuses equivalent to £300k a week gross? I'm curious as to your perception here..
very few obviously, that's not my point? Very few footballers earn 300k a week. Take my example, that's not a banker, a different industry altogether, £130m over 5 years on top of salary. My point being that many people have a low level of tolerance towards footballers earning this level of money, but in other sectors very little notice is taken.CubanPete said:

Agreed. And not to forget that they pay 50% tax, so Wayne's now giving our government £150k a week.. Bet the people who complain about footballers wagers are the same ones who complain when their local councils run out of dosh.
I do think footballers are over paid, but at least it is going to an English one.And its not just 'kicking' a ball around for 90 mins, its much much more than that, look at all the training they have to do, Plus it is hard work, being in a quality team means you will face much more competition to play week in and week out, e.g. Juan Mata at Chelsea. And also at the end of the day, its not just the love that these players have for the game, it is their profession, their job that puts a roof over their head and food on the table for their families.
Just look at Dean Ashton, his only 30 years old, but had to retire when he was 26 because of an injury, that meant no more playing football, and obviously he had to go look for a new career.
Ledley king is another example of highly rated player fked over by injuries, his only 33 years old and should still be playing today.
Also people don't realise how much money some footballers make for their club, I read somewhere that when Beckham was playing, he raised over £1 billion through merchandise such as shirts and boots. Whilst he was at Real Madrid, Madrid made $600 million through Beckham Shirts, in his first year alone Madrid sold over a million Beckham shirts.

It was your use of the word "many" that threw me.."yet many bankers receive yearly bonuses that eclipse this."
I don't think any bankers in the UK earn this sort of money. Maybe hedgies in the US - I just found your phrasing odd, like you believe the usual Daily Heil spiel that every bank employee drives at least a Bentley.

It's completely obscene, and all of us who watch or enjoy football should kick ourselves in the bks / punch ourselves in the tits for supporting a sport that allows and even encourages such cras obscenity.
Really? Why?No one can blame Rooney, however I think what brings out the anger is that everytime this happens it makes us focus on those less fortunate and more worthy. Nurse's, care workers, social workers who deal with the st end of humanity, are the first to get balmed when it goes wrong, for example paid a pittance. People who value the ability to kick a ball above other things are wrong to me.

Overpaid how? Not every footballer is earning mega bucks, plus there are loads of players that could easily go on to play for big clubs such as Man United, Madrid etc etc, but a few injuries and weeks sitting on the bench and suddenly, and no disrespect, they're playing for Newcastle, West Ham etc.

You make some good points but your maths are way out on the shirt sales id suggest. If, in his first year Madrid sold a million shirts ( I don't know if they did, where is that from?)) then they would make I would think at best $ 20 profit per shirt, I'd think less but even at that it equates to $20 million in the first year so how could they have made $600 million in his time at the club from shirt sales? Where do you get your figures from? At $20 million a year it'd take 30 years. And the Billion pound figure! Where's that from?
