Often alcohol induced, this sums it up for me.
I find the repost police and spelling police much more annoying though. In order to qualify as a PH poster one must first read the entire contents of PH to ensure we don't upset the repost police and then we must transfer our intended post to MS Word to complete the obligatory spell check or suffer the wrath of the spelling police.
When they invent decent search software for forums, I'll start feeling guilty about reposts.I find the repost police and spelling police much more annoying though. I would still be very interested in a system (like they have on some other forums), where you can hide and block posters that you don't want to see.
I would personally block all the spelling police posters as, when I read a thread about a certain topic, they drag it out and pollute it with their boring pedantic crap.
As for the original post, yes it is annoying when opinion is posted as fact, but like everything on the internet, you need to make your own judgements and filter through the crap.

What about when someone quotes the blocked person?I would personally block all the spelling police posters as, when I read a thread about a certain topic, they drag it out and pollute it with their boring pedantic crap.

Also the spelling police aren't a group, it's anyone on ph not someone who just goes around correcting apolling and gremmor

So we'll use the 'block' facility to block people who feel that correct spelling and grammar are important in the world. Then we'll block people who post opinion as fact. What shall we go for then? Looks like we might be posting to ourselves soon.

If you use a decent browser, it spellchecks as you write. Firefox does this, presumably others do too.Blue Meanie said:
It's a forum... Opinions will differ, exchanges can get heated, and people will talk nonsense... I don't find this any way unexpected. It is the same in the local pub.
Fair enough but (at least in pubs I used to go to) random people don't correct you on your choice of beer, or say that black shoes are best because brown shoes are for girls, then get heated because black shoes don't actually split and need constant polishing like everyone who wears trainers says and they don't but into your conversations and explain the origins of words like kiosk in a way as to try to start a "yo mamma" type competition.Ferg said:

It doesn't really matter on a public forum, this is not a legal document or a job interview.
Obviously if someone quotes someone then it may display, but at least it would cut down a huge amount of crap that we all have to wade through to get to the point of the actual thread.

Once upon a time pH was a land of helpful folk who would oft join in banter and japery about cars and such. It was a good and friendly place.
However I have noticed more and more the emergence of the "know better than you" approach. It's just a little more hostile and one up man-ish (or up woman- ish) than of old.
I realise tone is tricky to get into postings but it has become less appealing to contribute.
It's not all newbies but there are more keyboard warriors of late.
Just an observation.
I'd suggest you go and read this Oh HellfireHowever I have noticed more and more the emergence of the "know better than you" approach. It's just a little more hostile and one up man-ish (or up woman- ish) than of old.

Especially around page 4....
Yes there is banter, perhaps it is a bit harsh sometimes, but deep down I would say its still a friendly helpful place.
Also, this is the lounge, where anything goes, the individual motoring sections are still helpful....
PH... BANTER Matters!!!

Have a read through some threads on MLR, PH is a breath of fresh air afterwards. However I have noticed more and more the emergence of the "know better than you" approach. It's just a little more hostile and one up man-ish (or up woman- ish) than of old.

Snowy's post and the response is a shaft of light though in a gradually darkening room - thankfully the twunts do still have boundaries.
Big manly hugs to Snowy still though!

I was just going to mention my thread. In about 5 pages, several people offered to come out of their way to help me out, two of which made offers so generous that from now on i will feel a bit of a berk if i dont send them a christmas card. Yes the lounge can be a funny place, full of nutters, but believe me, some of the people here make mother theresa look like a renegade. PH....Friends Matter!!!
