I also seen a lad pick up a hot gun by the barrel and weld his hand shut around the barrel which had to be removed via surgery.
Nothing to add except eek Yowsers! That had to hurt.

I remember a very dashing photo of CW7 in his DPM jacket, lightweights, puttees and DMS boots from a few months back.

Contrary to Rambo movies, you can't fire them from the hip.
Tell that to this guy http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/campaign...
We fired them from the hip but only for the experience, it aint easy and aint accurate so hats of to that guy.

yikes When I was a little'un, I was doing some soldering with my dad and dropped the iron. Knowing not to touch the tip, I very carefully picked it up... by the nice clean shiny metal collar. paperbag Blistered the entire length of the top joint of my thumb and first two joints of index finger. It was phenomenally painful, orders of magnitude worse than anything else I've experienced - scaling that up to a whole hand doesn't bear thinking about. Poor bd!

I did something very similar when I was little - went to see what my dad was doing, leaned my arms on the bench, in so doing put one arm right along the length of his soldering iron and got a huge burn most of the way from elbow to wrist. I don't remember the pain, but I do remember the pleasure I got a couple of weeks later from eating the enormous thick chewy scab that formed. What makes me cringe about the above gun story is not the burn per se - I've also picked up hot things I've just welded and forgotten they were hot - but the "welded shut" and "removed by surgery" bits; the implication that he couldn't just drop the hot thing but had to stand there cooling down the thermal capacity of a white hot gun barrel with his hand yikes
