(I suggested put em in the vice and smack em with a hammer)
I did that once when I was young and stupid. I emptied the shot and gunpowder out first and still ended up having to remove bits of metal from a finger. Tango13 said:
Don't take them to the Police, you'll probably end up doing 5 years for illegal posession Cut them open, use the powder for a genie and throw the rest in somebody elses bin.
I agree with this. It only takes one tt behind the counter, and you'll end up getting nicked for possession of them.As others have suggested, slice them to remove the shot and the nitro flakes, and bung 'em in the bin/bury them.

oad of crap.
+1AFAIK it's not illegal to own shotgun shells without a licence, only to buy them.
Don't know the accuracy of the following, but it backs up what I seem to beleive.
http://www.firearmsexpert.co.uk/ammunition.html
It says "there is no requirement to have a certificate in order to possess most types of shotgun cartridges." Not "all", and it doesn't say which ones don't count and which ones do. And "I thought you didn't need a licence because some website said so" doesn't count as a defence. With a minimum five year sentence it isn't worth the risk, especially when all the other methods of getting rid of them are so much more fun.

As soon as anything as basic as an air rifle, is mentioned, it becomes a "weapon", and policemen with MP5k's get sent to check it out.
Why bother risking a wasted afternoon answering stupid questions, when you can dispose of them very easily and safely without bothering plod?

Of course, the 'fun' ways mentioned here which would possibly cause serious harm/death or result in a prison sentence are far more sensible.I'm a shotgun licence holder, so my info isn't simply "some website said so", but as I posted earlier, to the best of my knowledge as a licence holder, this is the case, and look I found a website showing the same - and notice I said that I don't know the accuracy of the info on the website.
I would imagine the most part referrs to shotgun cartridges that require a firearms licence to possess, eg 'slug' cartridges etc which even I would be arrested for possesing as a licence holder.

OT
This reminds me of a prank played at work years ago
Scenario is that John always used to go into Colin’s office with a cigarette between his fingers
Colin, got pissed off with the smokey smell so one day (when John’s was away from his desk) he emptied a shotgun cartridge into the ashtray on John’s desk.
John was on the phone, smoking away, and stubbed his fag out. Biggest genie (indoor) I have ever seen.
John practically shat himself....
oh man!!! proper belly laugh here in the office at that mental image This reminds me of a prank played at work years ago

Hello again, yes as mentioned provided they aren't slug or just have a few balls in them your fine to possess them. Yet you can't be sold them ironically.
I'm only in East Yorks, if you could chuck me a picture across or even on the thread then I'll see if they are worth having or fit for the bin.

It is not an offence to possess shotgun cartridges.Nice way for the OP to find out he has committed a firearms offence, by dropping them into his local nick.
If he isn't sure (and he doesn't seem to be), why risk it? Just bin them, and move on.
I have a FAC (Firearms Cert) but no shotgun licence so my knowlwedg of the laws surrounding shotguns is a little rusty. There will be a distinct set of legal issues with ownership and transportation.
It may not be illegal for you to have shotgun shells in your posession but it will probably be illegal to transport them, even if it is to the local police station to dispose of them.
The police have ZERO sence of humour regarding firearms, shotguns and ammunition and it would be VERY foolish to push your luck in any way.
Simply call the local police station and request a suitably trained officer to come to your premises to retrieve the ammunition.
Please remember the job of the police is not to protect citizens, it is to secure prosecution. DO NOT get on the wrong side of the cops as the Magistrates also have zero sence of humour.

Don't fk about. Take them to your local police station, they'd rather they were disposed of.
I recently dropped 60 rounds of .308" firearm ammunition into local plod who didn't ask any questions at all. That stuff does need a license, in all cases.
Get to your local station.
2 years ago I dropped off 30 rounds of 7.62 some short some long but all live rounds, and the police behind the glass didnt even bat an eyelid.I recently dropped 60 rounds of .308" firearm ammunition into local plod who didn't ask any questions at all. That stuff does need a license, in all cases.

Police station.
I had the same with a few belts of 5.56 and 7.62 which I "found" under a bridge, in river water, whilst working for the MOD. Bagged up, took to the police station, they took my contact details and I never heard anything else from it.
Or you could "play" with them - more than 1 way of setting off a shotgun cartridge, and it's not necessarily as dangerous as people make out. For example, taping them to a tree and using an air rifle from about 10m away to detonate (shoot the firing pin in the cap). Big bangs and shot everywhere. (although this is best if wearing leathers, a crash helmet, and there's nobody around for a quarter mile or so.)
Got an air rifle? Some cartridges use .177cal (or very close) lead shot which works equally well as a muzzle-load for an airgun.
Please note anything written after the second paragraph is not to be taken seriously, guns are not toys etc...
ETA the shooting of the pin would need a perfect shot. We found that it wouldn't go off if the air rifle pellet hit the lip of the cap, the pin surround. To get a decent pop, the pellet needs to hit the pin 100% dead on.
