Multi-blade razors
Discussion
Just stumbled onto this thread so apologies for any repeating that may occur:
I bought a brand new Dovo straight razor a couple (3 maybe?) years ago and started to get on quite well with it.
However, we then moved house, spent 9 months renovating it at every waking hour and had another baby.
Time and patience to master the straight razor simply passed me by.
I'm going to try to get back into it now though.
In the mean time, I'm now still using my trusty old (12 years?!) Gillette Sensor Excel twin blade razor - finding blades is getting more elusive so have been considering trying a DE instead whilst I mull over the straight blade.
For what it's worth I use Tabac shaving soap and a brush from The Invisible Edge. I also have the alum block.
Absolutely love the Tabac soap.

Just had a lovely shave with my Gillette Black Beauty.
How do others have their adjustable razors set? I only shave maybe twice a week and find the most aggressive setting works well.
It's different for everyone... The Black Beauty is essentially the Gillette Slim head, of which I have several. I always used setting 3 which I found about perfect... but everyone has different preferences. The lads above are using an aggressive head and loving it - which would be an 8 or 9 on your razor. How do others have their adjustable razors set? You know not to adjust your razor settings when it's tightened on the blade?
I'm sure you do - just wouldn't want you to damage your toy.

Speaking of smell, I love the smell of the Taylors Sandalwood cream but it doesn't give me as good a shave as the C&E Nomad stuff. Any ideas on something that will give me the best of both worlds?
If you think Taylor's sandlewood smells nice you need to try thishttp://www.shaving-shack.com/vulfix-old-original-s...
Smells good enough to eat. Lathers great
I only use that and tob grape fruit now. But the vulfix is the best I've tried

Big and clumsy would be my view, having been seduced by the looks. Many differ though!
Oh.What would be a good DE razor to start with? Preferably new.
Thanks!
Edited to add: I realise there are probably a million answers to this question but I can't be bothered to read 120 pages!
So just a short list of those that get mentioned time and again would be great

What's the general consensus regarding the Merkur razors?
I like the look of the Futur 761.
I used the Futur for ages - an excellent razor and the fact that it's adjustable is a massive bonus. I would highly recommend one and partner it with Feather blades. Start of with a gentle setting, maybe 3, and see how you get on.I like the look of the Futur 761.
I moved from a Future to vintage razors, so I don't use mine anymore, but I would rate it highly.

I've been using a Merkur classic for years and would agree with this.Hard to get those hairs under the nose, where the body of the razor stops you getting the angle right. However with practice it's possible and in other respects, the shave is fine and the razor itself is easy to clean.
I've been using a Merkur Futur for last few years and love it.
No problem getting it under my nose and apparently I have a fair sized hooter.
For soaps I still find the best is a puck of Mitchells Woolfat in the bottom of my shave bowl and then add an almond size blob of Palmolive cream on the top of it. Bags of brillaint lather very quickly. The Mitchells lasts for ages and the Palmolive is about £1.50 a tube.

Thanks for the above.
What DE would be easier to get those hairs under the nose and isn't as clumsy!?
I went from the adjustable Futur to a fixed Edwin Jagger DE89 which I much prefer, partnered with Feathers. What DE would be easier to get those hairs under the nose and isn't as clumsy!?
I wouldn't get hung up on adjustability tbh. The EJ's a really good place to start (or end, in my case!) being mildish, but not overly so. On its more aggressive settings the Futur is just plain scary!

The Muhle razors look very nice.
As a DE beginner should I really be going for adjustable?
I wouldn't bother. I should say I've never used an adjustable, but I've never felt the need to either. I have a Mühle R89 - basic, but very good. Cheap too. I've been using it for a couple of years now.As a DE beginner should I really be going for adjustable?
I've just used a Wilkinson Sword Classic with their own shaving soap and brush (I know far from the best but cheap and convenient). Good overall but two things: how wet should the brush be? It seemed to require lots of attempts to get a decent amount of soap out and then a good layer on my face. And one side of my neck went quite red - too little soap? Bad technique with the razor?
