Do you have a tattoo?
Discussion
How does it work with getting/deciding on a tattoo?
Say for example I fancied a sleeve...how do you decide on what exactly you want?
Do people tend to see stuff others have and say 'I want one like that'?
Or tattoo artists have set pieces that you can choose from?
Personally speaking; if I were to have a sleeve done then I'd want the artwork to be a bit like a salvador dali piece in the sense there was a number of images that all tied in together - each one with resemblance or meaning that was personal to me or something i felt strongly about. I wouldn't want a set piece as I'd get tired of it as it meant nothing other than looking good.
Would a be able to go to a tattoo artist and tell them things I feel are important to me and they would come up with a design?

Tattooists have books and some of them the walls of the shop full of "flash art" , designs you can pick out.
You could choose one or more have them changed to how you want and have lots incorporated into a sleeve
with your own ideas as "fill in".
The more exclusive artists might prefer to do unique pieces and charge accordingly.
I have 10 pieces of flash art on my arms as I didn't have any imagination until I came up with my chest piece idea.

I had my first one a couple of weeks ago. I waited a few years before going ahead. Mainly because I was unsure of what I wanted. Eventually I had an idea and sent that to the artist, they then made it much better than I thought.
I just like that it is original and special to me not just a repeat or something off a wall but we are all different. So I would find someone you like and have a chat with them. No doubt when it's down on paper or on the iPad it will be far greater than you imagined.

Ta, yeah he's a good lad.
However.
None of the guys/girls at Kamil's have or really do flash stuff. They may, on occasion, draw something new and original that they want to tattoo and offer it via FB/IG etc. But most, if not all for the more established ones, is custom and original.
With my latest on, the leg piece, I had an idea of what i wanted. An earth/skull with a road leading into it... I found some reference images and emailed them over.
When i went for the session we sat and looked through them, he already had an idea, the he found some more images of the earth that matched the lighting on the image of the road we had chosen.
Once the images for each section were collated he worked his (pretty bloody impressive) Photoshop skills until we had something. This was then printed, stenciled and outlined on the leg. Maybe an hour from start to finish until we were ready to start inking. But then I'm pretty easy to work with and he know what I like.
With Mrs Johnny's latest sleeve she wanted and Japanese theme, a Samurai mask and to incorporate her first tattoo, the dragon on her shoulder/arm, into the helmet of the Samurai...
This time he drew it all on freehand, no stencil, and outlined (inked) the main elements. Second session he did the face an lower forearm elements. Thursday he reworked the existing dragon and did some of the helmet.
Most decent artists work the same way - give them your idea/reference. They go away and design something which is then stenciled on, or they freehand it at the first session and start once you're both in agreement and happy with the design.

There is, of course, the flash/ out of a book option. You could choose one or more have them changed to how you want and have lots incorporated into a sleeve

I hope you don't have children
Why on earth should that matter? No place for rude/insensitive comments.
Especially when involving children.
Do you know their circumstances?
What on earth has it got to do with you??
What an overreaction.
I would guess Coolhand's comment is that the image might be a tad scary for little 'uns, that's all.
Anyway, moving on.... Good artwork well executed on both Johnny and Mrs.Johnny (Gretchen, I'm guessing?)
