Is this not crying out to be inhabited by a shaven-headed Donald Pleasance looky-likey with a penchant for stroking white cats and planning world domination? Haven't checked if this is a repost; if so sorry.

Believe it or not I grew up in a town, which is 20 miles away from it. I remember visiting the place, when it was still a shrine to the Bulgarian Communist Party. It is truly enormous. I believe they blasted something like 50m off the top of the mountain in order to create a level building site. It took something like 4 years to build and cost $15m in 1981 as most stuff inside was imported from the West - fancy curved photovoltaic double glazing, expensive air conditioning, lighting and fittings etc... There were plans to turn it into a casino post 1989, but nothing happened and then the place was robbed of all fittings...

Here's an interesting item, that kind of fits with this topic. The pointless bridge:

(apologies for crap pic - taken from moving car)

Apparently there was a road planned, they built the bridge first then never got round to the road. It's been there for well over 20 years now. I can't even see where the road was supposed to go - it's pretty obvious on the near side, but some serious dynamite would be required to do anything worthwhile on the other!

Where is that? Reminds me of the motorway to nowhere! Come of the M8 on the south side of the Kingstone bridge in Glasgow (jct19 I think) and the flyover is built but doesn't go anywhere!! Not been there for a while but might have changed as I seem to remember an extension to the M74 being built???

Sarajevo, BiH.

There's a bit motorway between Chester and Ellesmere Port, IIRC, which kind of just ends/starts as if they meant to carry on at a later date but never got round to it. It is joined or left from slip roads, as if a junction rather than the end of the motorway. Anyone know where I mean?

Nope, no change still. There's a whole new flyover been placed over the M8 slightly further south.

They're great! Can i ask where?

I'm planning a trip to the Megatron when it's a touch drier.

Anyone in Sheffield fancies a nosy later on in the year, there more than welcome.

There's some great reports on 28dayslater.com but, well you know.

Hey - what's the closest you've been to Retford? I've always been interested in this sort of thing. I'm aware of the 'secrecy' so dont have to go into too much detail..
I'm from Retford! My mate was really into his local history, tunnels between pubs n' such. I'll be back again after March.

I got told it was a BMP7 (IIRC) But i am no expert. It was definitely Russian is all I can say! Havent quite worked out why Russian tanks would me on a MOD/USAF site.

And yep there was two, both the same at the base in different places. But in different conditions, one we could get in the main hatch, the 2nd we could only get in via the drivers viewing bit (full of technical terms me)

If that's the one near Charing Cross, they built an office block on it a good while ago now.

They're amphibious too, or were, that one doesn't look like it'll be able to do much of anything.
I can't think why they'd be on an RAF site, that wikipedia page says that the US used some for training

* The PT-76 was used by the US Army for OpFor training. They were modified in a number of ways including the replacement of the engine with a caterpillar diesel engine, changing the turret hatch to a rear hinged arrangement and the fitting of US radios and antennae mounts. Due to the new engines different exhaust arrangements, the exhausts were rerouted to use the water-jet ports rather than the original engine exhaust.
but given that the hatch hinges forward, I'm guessing it's not one of them.
Has the base been used for anything since the MoD left?
I remember seeing an engineless T-34 for sale in a local paper a few years ago and that had been used by a paintballing place.

Ah cool thanks,

Yeah the site is used for air softing and that’s it as far as I know. I hadn’t thought they put them there though, but I could be wrong.

Hey, nice one - thanks for that.

One of my best mates used to live on Cobwell Road although he never mentioned anything. There is a pub and social club on there, maybe they have something to do with it..

Cheers, Greg.
