Yes, a shame indeed. Really liked him in quite a few films!

Oh, that's a sad one. I recall him looking a bit ropey last time I saw him being interviewed and that must've been a good 5 years ago.

US Emmy award-winning actress Mary Tyler Moore has died aged 80, her publicist says.
Fantastic actress and an early crush from my youth. Many hours spent watching the MTM show.
Me too. I really fancied her when I was 8.
So did I and I'm even older than Eric. eek It started when she was in the Dick van Dyke show in my case however.

Sad to hear.

Last of the old style (i.e. pre rock and roll/pop era) DJs.

I would include Brian Matthew in that category, 88 years old.

When I was working up to a couple of years ago I spent many a happy motorway mile reminiscing with him on a Saturday morning, only to be woken from my dream state by Jonathan Ross and then Graham Norton shoot

To some extent - although the music he plays and has played for most of his career is embedded in the rock and roll/pop era.

Carrington was of that group who started broadcasting in the military at the end of World War 2 in the late 1940s and early 50s so their music was swing era, big band, crooners and jazz. And they continued to concentrate on that type of music for most of their subsequent broadcasting careers. With his passing, I can't think of anyone left who hails from that time period and plays that kind of music.

I know he isn't a DJ but the only person of a similar ilk I can think of that is still actively broadcasting is Nicholas Parsons.

Anyone else?

Yes, I do agree, I was thinking as much along the lines of their very easy listening presenting style, probably never to be repeated with todays music and DJ's. I suppose Ken Bruce would be closest to that now for me.

A (relatively) younger person who has been bumped into oblivion by Radio 2 and who I much enjoyed is Russel Davies.

Radio 2 in particular seem to have no faith at all in professional presenters and want to substitute presenters with "celebs" from screen and stage. Some are better than others (I would say Michael Ball does a good job) but some are just cackling rowdies (Alan Car and Melanie Sykes at the moment). I have to turn that pair off as they are just too noisy and don't make any comment about the music they are playing.

I don't think they have been on since about 2012.
