Bit of speedflying down hills in the Lakes. Looks a bit close to the ground to be doing loops but I imagine it gets the blood up.

No it's a method for welding cast iron, - preheating the structure to minimize the stresses from the temperature differential (and hopefully prevent any cracking). Furthermore you can annealing the metal afterwards to further reduce stress in the weld. Phase changes in cast iron I think only happen above 900 degrees from memory (which is why following welding post heat treatments are usually required, or mechanical stress relief (shot peening etc))
Yeah I've done that myself, but you're supposed to get it to red heat first, then weld it. As I understand it, your weld dissolves loads of carbon from the cast, and if the cast is cold, the weld pool will quench and form martensite, and be brittle and crack. So you need to get the cast up to critical temperature so that the two bits cool down together. (Might be wrong here but that's my understanding)As for annealing it afterwards, well yes it'll relieve stress, but then it'll be really soft surely? Which you don't really want in an anvil. Maybe he doesn't care as he's only using it for brass.

However, now that it does burn diesel, it is ineligible to run in the Top Fuel class, since one of the limiting regulations is to burn nitromethane/methanol.
