According to the police yesterday, it happens about 3 times a day in the car rental car park in Malaga. Why they don't just put barriers up I've no idea - that would at least put a stop to the grab and run...

Was good seeing it on the CCTV, especially the bit where I punched him - hey, at least it didn't happen in the UK, I'd have probably been done for assault.

Thats definitely the thing to take from this....lots of people get robbed, but you maintained enough presence of mind to chase him down and smack him in the face! Utter utter w**kers.

Could've been worse I suppose - when we were in the British Consulate, a couple came in that had been on their way to the hotel with their 84 year old mother, stopped at a Lidl to get a bottle of water, came out and some s had got into their car and took absolutely everything, ie. ALL their luggage, including a load of pills etc for the old mother who'd had a heart attack a while back. Understandably they were completely distraught. So there's another lesson, never park anywhere when you have all your luggage in your car.

Right, gonna get off PH now, but thing is all my books were loaded onto the iPad so got nothing to read now...FFS.

Similar happened to my parents in Majorca. They broke into a marked hire car, stole suit cases with over £5K of clothes/jewellery in! (more than they were insured for)

Seems that Spain is full of thieving s targeting tourists.

That is shocking, either that or set a trap - I imagine it's the same people!

Can you get a copy of the CCTV? hehe

Absolute fking scum.
I really feel for you mate, and hope that you can salvage whats left of your holiday.

Not that this will make you feel much better right now, but I own a 5 bed Villa in Orlando...it's yours next year free of charge if you want it for a week or two. Something to hopefully help put the smile on your little ones' faces.
I'm sure PH can help towards the cost of 4 flights too....I don't think I've heard of such a worthwhile cause in a while.

If you're interested, DM me and I'll send you the link to our Website so you can have a gander.

Try and enjoy the rest of your hols....

all the best

Sorry to hear it, and hope you can salvage something of your holiday!

His wife had taken photocopies of the passports and kept them in her handbag so at least they had some sort of evidence of who they were. How many of us would think to do that though!
Maybe I've done too much travel to dodgy places, but we always photocopy passports, visas, driving licences, etc and have copies of each others hidden away. I also have scans of the same plus card details, emergency numbers, etc in an encrypted archive on my Dropbox drive - 2 mins on an internet-connected computer and I could have copies back easily. Easy to do, doesn't take long, and can be very useful indeed if you're unlucky enough to have something like this happen. I probably spend too much time thinking about what can go wrong though!

What can I say? I am truly humbled by that....amazing. Your generosity (and that of others on here that have offered help) has really left me completely gobsmacked that people I don't even know are willing to help someone out that has had a bit of a crap time - While it has been a st few days (and an expensive few days), I really couldn't take any of you up on your kind offers. There are many more people that are much worse off than I and it would be wrong for me to accept, after all this is just money (albeit with a bit of time to re-boost the confidence of my daughter). Please don't see this as me rejecting your offers, just your messages have been more than I expected from a rant. (How did I score out of 10 on that rant anyway? No-one scored it.)

WhatNow, I might actually message you anyway as I quite fancy Orlando next year (but I'll pay for it!) biggrin

Amazing, was in that airport three weeks ago on hols hiring a car and going to the same place! (Well, just nearby, La Herradura).

Have to say, car park was well lit, plenty of people about and very safe feeling, not the sort of place you'd be paranoid about watching your stuff every second so can see how easily it could happen.

Amazing they don't put barriers up if this is a known issue, as has been said you just drive straight out. When I rented a car in Florida I had to stop and show ID etc before we could get out of the car park!

JR, give these guys a shout www.sailandstay.eu Two British guys with a 45 foot yacht. They'll take you for a sail, do you a nice lunch, you can swim and snorkel round the boat, ski behind their RIB, it's a fantastic day out, very chilled and not dear at all.

Hope the jelly fish have gone, little feckers!

Oh, and I keep everything together when I travel, much easier to keep safe than different bits in different bags. And anyway, in the OP's case, they took everything so splitting it all up wouldn't have made a jot of difference.

Feel for you. My mate was pickpocketed (wallet in front jean pocket not the back pocket) on the Rome underground. Told the police they said that was the eighth that day. Other mate was in Rome too with wife and teenage son. Bag snatcher targets his wife and run's off. His lad (footie player) flies off after him round a corner where 2 other blokes are waiting with bag thief. They beat the snot out of him and get away. Apparently the Rome police were useless and implied unless he 'paid' them they wouldnt investigate! Sorry that's no help to you OP but it does seem to holidaymakers are being targeted in europe at the moment. Hope you get it all sorted and your family are ok.

Superb, it is good too know that there are still genuinely top blokes out there, WhatNow what an amazing gesture and Joyrider1 you have handled this impeccably, try and get a copy of the cctv, I am sure we want to see scumbag getting punched in the face, plus the tape may speed things up with insurance.
Easier said than done but try to forget all about it for now and make the most of your holiday, they stole some posessions, do not let them steal a potentially great family holiday.

P.S. WhatNow I had been planning Orlando with the family next year or possibly early 2014, had made no arrangements but if you rent out a villa I would be interested in checking out your website, I would rather give my money to a decent bloke, and I would not be looking for discount, If it is out of my range I wont waste your time, thanks.

Are you going to be able to get new passports before you're due to leave the villa? If not you can use one of my properties if you like... they're all in Portugal (Vilamoura) but only 2-3 hours from Malaga by car.

Really? I honestly thought almost the opposite to be honest, I always keep everything separate but I am pretty paranoid about this sort of thing happening

ETA: Misread your post a bit. Whilst I do tend to keep passports separate from cash and cards separate from everything, on the occasions where they do mix I don't ever let the bag out of my sight. Although I don't have kids, so it is a lot easier for me to do.
Nope I have a special carrier which holds cash, passports, tickets etc and even has the little labels on each segment to ID where they should be stored. That is the one thing that doesn't leave my side and I carry it on the plane with me too.

ETA something like this

When something like this happens it always bring outs the true generosity of some of the people on here, bravo guys.

OP, such a shame that happened and from what you say they should really do something about that carpark.

I hope the rest of your holiday gets better!
