I think the number of people eating breakfast at work dwindle when fire risk assesment was cariied out and the toaster was removed.

I eat breakfast at work unashamedly although I made sure it was acceptable before I started bringing in bags of cereal etc. Fortunately they pay for milk/tea/coffee etc. which is very kind.

I get paid by the hour and the clock starts when I walk through the door but I can easily tap away and push a mouse about whilst eating. Conversely I can easily work right through lunch when not paid so it's very much give and take.

We provide toast for peoplep which is fine within reason but it is annoying when you get the same old people spending the first 30 minutes of the day having a leisurely breakfast day in day out.

Depends on how leisurely they are about leaving at the end of the day. And whether they're paid by the hour. TBH I couldn't care how much or how little work someone does as long as they do the work on time when I give it, it's of the expected quality and I'm not paying them by the hour. If someone is dossing all day and then claiming overtime to meet deadlines, then that would be taking the piss. If they are meeting or exceeding their targets and I haven't got anything else for them to do, I couldn't care if they took 2 hour lunches. In other words, we have to judge each case on its own merits, to use that old cliché.

PS lovely car, great colour. biggrin

That is illegal - I'm not exactly sure of the timings etc but it is something like - if you start work before 8am you are entitled to a morning break (away from your work station of 15-20 minutes and at lunchtime i think it is a half hour break again away from your workstation - a call to council environmental health will give you you actual details

I eat at my desk while I watch TV... I can't really be away from the desk if there is no cover. I have lunch and dinner there as well if I'm on nights. Chinese and pizza take-aways can smell the place out though but everyone does it so it's not too bad.

I guess it depends on your contract terms. If you are supposed to start work at a specified time and at that time you go and have breakfast then clearly that is taking the pee.

In my situation I'm paid a daily rate for 8 hours work and its up to me when I do it. I have breakfast on site in the restaurant or at the desk at 7:30 whilst reading emails. I don't consider that to be taking the pee.

I start a day shift at 7am meaning I'm up at 0530 and out of the house by 0600. My body just can't handle eating at that time of the morning so I have a bowl of Weetabix and a massive mug of NATO standard tea whilst I'm checking my emails first thing.

It's actively encouraged or else we are so hungry by mid morning we're next to useless anyway!

Pretty sure that's illegal (unless you are not in the UK)

Not if it was in the contract at signing time, it isn't. Anyone's perfectly entitled to work whatever hours they like.

There is a difference between choosing to work through & not being allowed.

More info here though & there is exceptions

Depends if opting out of the WTD was part of the contract. You signed it, so tough titty.

Not saying it's right, or anything, but it is legal. Course, you can demand the opt-out be removed, but I wonder a) how many people read the contract properly, b) know you can get the WTD optout removed or c) have the balls to do it - there are plenty of people out there looking for work at the moment, after all...

I always eat when I get to work. But then I get here half hour before I'm due to start (8am). I don't see anything wrong with this. We get free fruit delivered each week and the restaurant and coffee shop on site are reasonably priced.

I often go to the gym before I start work though, so would much rather eat once I'm finished and am in the office, instead of eating before the gym, then feeling ill after a workout.

I have no problem with people eating breakfast or lunch at their desk. We don’t sit front of house, so clients don’t get to see or smell it.

What does pee me off a bit, are those that are consistently late, apologise with the same weak excuse and then sit down and eat their porridge

I think it's a case of having a little common sense, don't you?

Your examples are pretty ridiculous, considering that the vast majority of people stating that they eat breakfast at work, more than likely work in an office or an environment that allows them to do so.

I've run this horror scenario through my Kray XMP supercomputer. The net result of this chilling event is that, I am sorry to announce, the world will end.

My summer job this year (and post-uni employment) standard working hours are 8am - midnight, so you always eat 3 meals a day at your desk.

The company gave you a £10 allowance to buy dinner with.
