What are shelf clouds?
Quite rare in the UK - but they help signify the strength and size of your storm. Quite common in the US.

Looks like east of Brighton to Kent has still got some rain.
There's another big rash of showers coming NE across France from the Bay of Biscay, but if anything, looks further east still by the time it reaches us.
I've been tracking these summer storms for a few years now, and they do seem to follow a set route. Form over the Basque country, move up slightly inland along the French west coast, and then as we start getting excited they turn and head for Belgium/Netherlands.There's another big rash of showers coming NE across France from the Bay of Biscay, but if anything, looks further east still by the time it reaches us.
Our house in France is right under their route - daily storms in July/August are common!

Had a very odd "glowing cloud" sunset here in Kew.
Looking at the radar on NetWeather it appears the main bulk of the storm is going to miss west London, is this the only storm tonight or are there several in the pipeline?
MetOffice are very bullish that we're entering a 24 hour period when storms could appear. Looking at the radar on NetWeather it appears the main bulk of the storm is going to miss west London, is this the only storm tonight or are there several in the pipeline?

Had a all of a mighty bang of thunder over my house at about 3am last night woke the home house up set off a load of car alarms by me in south wales. Also about 2 mins later a thud of my cat running up stairs opening my door and diving under my bed think we are keeping him in tonight.
Been a real horiable day with the heat very close and muggy for most of the day not fun when stuck under a roasting hot engine bay.
All Im asking for is for next sat to be fine and no rain as im at a track day down in llandow in my mx5 and want the roof down as its very tight inside with the roof up and helmet on.
Saying that as we speak the sky as gone really dark looks like its not far away from me.
When is the best of the action likely to be.
Storms are likely any time now in next 24 hours - nothing likely in your part of the world for next few hours as nothing visible on radar. Been a real horiable day with the heat very close and muggy for most of the day not fun when stuck under a roasting hot engine bay.

Local low pressure and the warm/moist air being pushed up by the Spanish Plume (caused by low pressure to the west, high pressure to the east) mean a very unstable atmosphere.
Looks like a line of potential has bubbled up exactly along the M1 between Northampton and London, caught me by surprise!
Game on!
The storm around Kent appears to have run out of thunder, but in terms of size it is HUGE.
The storms appear to have lost some of their westward direction - more northerly than NNW.
