Are you ready for the 1 day heat wave?

34 degrees is quite an incredible heat considering the lack of 'build up'

It isn't though is it.

Gets to that in the UK give or take every year
You've missed my point - it's not an incredible temperature, although slightly out of the ordinary. What is incredible is the speed it has built up. Normally for this kind of temperature you need lots of ducks in a row in terms of cloudless days, high pressure anchored in the correct location to get light southerly winds and we require these conditions in place for a while. This has arrived quickly.

33.2 at LHR - waiting to board at Manchester so I can relay live from Heathrow hehe

Not looking forward to tonight - going to take the kids out of their loft rooms and let them sleep downstairs!

Good signals for a repeat next week. In the meantime the south will benefit from being on the edge of the Azores high. More mixed further north.

Temperature graph for Porthmadog in Wales - showing the heat really arrived suddenly, over a couple of days - then vanished again promptly today.

Some storms have cropped up in the Midlands - you may get lucky if some pop up further south...

That's the end of the heat - this week will see low pressure systems to the north, providing something of a north/south split. The north will see frequent rain, but nothing too 'organised' - much cooler.

The South should remain mostly dry, but not hot. Hovering around 20oC.

It does look almost cool for the outlook, but there will still be some heat close enough to get sucked up at the drop of a hat.
Indeed

UK is sitting on the cusp of the weather:

Small changes could easily mean a couple of weeks of hot weather - or a washout summer! As a smeone who lives south of the M4, I'm quite happy with the summer we've had biggrin

Remaining unsettled but not full on Atlantic for the next week or so. Further south you are, the better.

Good hopes for something to start around next weekend in terms of warmth and stable summer weather, but I'm making no promises.

Flying up to Bradford today - shocked to see heavy rain and 14oC forecast! That's a typical Christmas Day in Berkshire...

Prolonged rain for the South later today...

Interesting that there is cross-model agreement on high pressure and a warm spell starting next weekend, but very little optimism it will happen.

A deep area of low pressure will pass by Scotland mid week, but the South remains as it has - comfortably 20oC. The low pressure makes forecasting what happens later trickier!

Autumn? Short cut to winter next week!

Pleasant weekend coming up, short lived high pressure in charge. High 20s possible in the South.

Next week it looks like a northerly will arrive direct from the Arctic. Cool days, cold nights - risk of frost for susceptible places. Cloudier towards the East.

On that note - I'm heading abroard mid week next week! tongue out

As Mr GrimNasty pointed out, won't be as hot as I hoped.

Cool spell next week not as bad as feared either.

Then... we have really lovely looking hopeful charts. Time will tell, but will we see high pressure anchored over the UK...?

Growing evidence of that heatwave at the end of the week, but not nailed on yet...
