Thunder started in Newcastle, bit earlier than i was expecting
Storms in the North will be due to convergence zone (see image). If storms appear in the South, they'll be created by convection and could be quite severe due to the heat.

There appears to be a consensus now amongst various weather sites, if you're in the black area in particular, then watch out for severe storms. Generally thunder storms could occur anywhere though.

I love a good storm smile I'm just one the lower edge of the black zone.
Chances are low, but if they happen they should be 'a good storm'

New warning from Met Office for tomorrow for storms - effecting the SE bounce

Again, low probability but high impact if you're caught in one.

I assume the fact you forget to write anything is because you were rushing to close the office?

Why is the temperature higher in late afternoon, rather than peak "sun" hours? Is it built up heat?
nice question - over to you Pug
As guessed, build up of heat. Of course, it depends on factors such as wind and cloud as well. Sun is strongest when it's directly above you and you will burn fastest then.

However until a point in the mid-afternoon, the heat reaching the ground is still larger than the heat escaping. Mid-afternoon, the sun becomes low enough that equilibrium is reached, and then as it starts to set we can finally lose some heat at a faster rate!

Yep June - although I got it wrong, I believed the paper I read said 33.9C was the record for June, it's actually higher 35.6C

Records by various criteria can be seen here.

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/climate...
Incidentally, 33.9 now recorded at Heathrow today

(stands back and waits for Mr GN's lecture on temps at LHR wink )

I see MO ttter claiming LHR 34.5C now. Where will the insanity end!
I suspect it's a bit late in the day to go any higher wink

Hope so.

Although this looks like the end of this heatwave.
Very much so. Moving towards a spell influenced by Atlantic. Likely to create a NW/SE split, with the SE enjoying low-mid 20s.

Line of sharp storms across the SE, just had thunder and a rain burst, hopefully the humidity will clear now.
Strange night, at 10pm in West Berks there was a pleasant cooling breeze.

At 2am most of the household was awake, humidity had gone sharply up and no one could sleep! Nice and cool now, although we missed the action ;(

Went to London yesterday afternoon for a meeting. How the heck do people use the underground in this weather? I only had to go two stops from Waterloo to London Bridge and the tube was like a sauna. Got off wringing wet.
Air conditioned 125 in to Paddington, then either air-conditioned circle line and walk or Uber wink

Even before the aircon was added, I would use the circle line only - because it's only just below ground. The deep lines, such as the jubilee you used, are saunas.

Enjoy the sunshine today, goes downhill rapidly from here! No summer currently in sight. NW getting the worst of it, SE getting the least rain.

This is Wednesday's chart from the MetOffice:

I saw pictures on twitter of northerners lighting their fires! It was certainly a cold day, and a CET record is one to believe.

Hopeful signs for a return to summer-light next week, especially for the South thumbup

Looks like things are warming up mid week next week for the south.

But not 30+ thank god.
Thursday in particular sees warm air dragged up from the continent (becoming a habit over the last few summers) - without comes the risk of boom, flash and BOOM!

Quite a big upgrade overnight - week getting increasingly warm and humid. Most of UK should benefit from increased temps. Got to stress the humid bit though. This looks like it will extend in to the weekend. Will bring thunder and heavy showers increasing with the temps and time.
