This BBC article referring to the clock at the Houses of Parliament as "Big Ben" when, in fact, Big Ben is the bell inside the clock tower.

(Yes, ok, I know the clock and the clock tower are often colloquially referred to as Big Ben, but it still annoys me)
Elizabeth Tower. I am sure that name'll catch on!

smile
I don't like it, it is a stupid name, but then I am a republican.

I think it is acceptable to call it Big Ben as a whole as people will know what you are talking about. I don't think the clock actually has a name anyway, just the main bell and the tower. I went up there earlier this year and it is fascinating, and quite loud!

I think it is also acceptable to call the flag the Union Jack.

W.S.Gilbert did, so it's entirely acceptable.

I love the film. I love the quote. I love the meme.

What annoys me beyond reason is that the comma should be a semi-colon. nerd

These, these bloody things. I never know what they are from and if they don't have a tagline I never understand the relevance, I presume it's because I hardly ever watch films. I still don't know what the "It's definitely Aliens" one is about, or the smiling bloke with the braided hair.

A four hour charge through the heart of the night. Another hour to clear passport control and load the car onto Brittany Ferries’ surprisingly small but nonetheless impressive looking ‘Normandie Express’ high speed Channel crosser. Sliding, exhausted, into a reclining seat at the vessel’s stern I was pleasantly surprised by the legroom – a definite improvement over that on offer aboard the DVT-inducing, airborne sardine tins that earn their keep carrying obnoxious drunks to and from the continent.

For a few moments I watched the churning wake and fast-receding Hampshire shoreline then, at last, I settled down for some shuteye. The rhythmic pulse of the diesels and the ship’s gentle roll would surely waft me to sleep in no time…

Erm, no. As soon as the ‘Normandie Express’ was free of the harbour restrictions and able to open her throttles the self-loading cargo began to shuffle in. I hadn’t bargained on eight year old Leo, loudly playing Monopoly with his equally vocal sister. At 6:45am. I hadn’t envisaged the snotty, Sunny Delight-fuelled brats who felt the need to dart endlessly between the seats, and I certainly had no desire to spend the duration of the journey sniffing the badly-tattooed feet of the fat, sandal-wearing bint who chose to sit directly across the aisle from where I was desperately trying to snooze.

Nothing changes. Be it boat, bus, ‘plane or train, public transport is the sts. Avoid.
I agree with you about public transport, but you should just get a cabin. I think I've been on that boat last year (Portsmouth - Le Havre) and the cabin was excellent. Airconditioned, comfortable bed & a pretty reasonable price.

You'll show him your meme? Kinky.

This one probably doesn't belong as my annoyance is perfectly justified, but...

Motorway roadworks where the Free Recovery sign at the start tells road users to call 0703456348392123847566 for assistance. OK that's too many digits, but you get my point. How likely is it that anyone is going to remember the number from the sign if they break down?

Pedestrians who dress like fking ninjas after dark when walking on unlit B-roads. Would it kill you to wear a reflective armband at a minimum, and maybe carry a torch? Because it sure as hell might kill you if you don't. rolleyes

The latest McDonald's add for the pulled pork wrap thingy.

Whats her chops gets the wrap out then grabs some pulled pork, but hang on the sauce needs to go on first. So a shot of her putting the sauce on the wrap, the pork has vanished.
Then the crisp fresh lettuce goes on top of the sauce, pork still nowhere to be seen.
Then the chunky 'slaw is shown.
Cut back to the wrap and the coleslaw is under the lettuce, with the now reappeared pork on top of the lettuce.

Does my head in.

It does look good though smile

On the subject of motorway roadworks, the policy on the M3 at the moment on the roadworks from just before J4a through to J2 seems to be that if there is any kind of accident they shut the entire motorway. I've been affected by this 3 times in the past couple of months now (my daily commute is along much of the M3 from 4a down to the M27).

Last night I was sat stationary for over 20 mins, engine off, almost level with the half mile sign for the J5 exit and I simply can't understand why there wasn't at least some flow due to cars exiting at J5.
