The pipe tobacco thread.
Discussion
I was smoking some Mac Baren Plumcake at the weekend, I've got the method down now, packed the pipe, got the lights and tamping right and before long had a nice white ash insulating the tobacco in the bowl, that would generally not need more than a single relight, and if it did start to peter out a bit, could be brought back to a good smoulder by with a few long, slow draws. I got right into the smoking rhythm, keeping it cool, getting perfect draws and leaving only a little unburnt tobacco from each bowl. The taste was lovely, the room note was exquisite. You're always popular in a smoking lounge when you're smoking aromatics!
I did get a bit of tongue bite, but I'd had probably 6-7 bowls with only a cup of coffee through the middle. When I'm smoking cigars, I prefer to keep my mouth and tongue wet, as it helps to prevent harshness but I think I may need to examine some different tobacco blends to see if I can avoid bite with the pipe. I don't think I burned too hot, I wasn't puffing away like an old steam engine, I think it's just a chemical burn from the alkalinity of the smoke.
Either way, very enjoyable.
