Probably.By "perfect student house" I assume you mean only damp on the ground floor, woodlice in double not triple figures, garden like the amazon jungle with no lawnmower, a toilet that just about flushes and central heating that sometimes works?
It's less than a year of your life, it's character building, get on with it! :-)

I was thinking more of a house with enough space for all our stuff (one we looked at didn't have room for any more than a bed in one of the rooms), and less than a 20 minute walk to the town centre. It's less than a year of your life, it's character building, get on with it! :-)
Other than that I'm not fussed, but would like to at least have a look at a house before putting money down on it.
No I wouldn't say you were being unreasonable but, just go for a house that fits you in, within a reasonable distance of the town and be done with it.
A place we used to stay after friday/saturday nights was a right dive, student house (owned by 2 mates, fortunately I didn't have to live there)where we used to doss after going out on the piss, it was the dirtiest, filthiest, sttest house I've ever slept in, but boy there were some good nights
"The Stanton Street Motel" fantastic memories.
As mentioned above, it's character building

Now, September seems ages off, but a lot of people are getting organised already, so we had our first house viewings today.
You've known these people for two months, but yet you're already sorting out accommodation for next year? Unless you're all doing the same course, I don't see the point in that. As said, anything can happen between now and September.
If you're in a 'university town' then accommodation will always be available. I'd look in the summer term, not before.
Aaargh this bullst! Bane of my life when at Uni. fking Freshers get in a letting-agent-induced panic and everyone has to get next year's house sorted 5 minutes after going to uni. It's all a scam, the agents want early decisions because then then the existing tenants are less likely to be in a position to confirm for the following year. So they keep everyone moving round each year and take their cut.
Freshers need a right good fking slap of common sense over this. The problem is that even if you can see how ridiculous this is, you've probably got a choice of living on your own or signing up early. bds.
Anyway, best house I lived in was three floors that used to be three separate flats. Absolute st-hole but my bedroom was massive, right next to a bathroom and kitchen and with a nice view. My Mum wanted to call the Council and have it condemned! We found that one in the first week of September, saving us rent over the Summer.

You're not being unreasonable, as it's absolute BS that you need to find a house this early.
On the flipside, if there's a big group of you you may have to accept that not everyone will be delighted with each decision - if it's not majority rule this time then don't be too upset if someone else vetos the next decision.
To be honest i'd wait until i got to know people better. I signed up to live with the same folks in the Jan or Feb of the first year and it turned out to be a terrible decision; by the end of the first year i knew for sure what i always suspected - they were a bunch of fvckwits.
Cheers,
Rob

Thanks for the advice all, it's been very useful.
The latest comment from my mate was that I was being "easily led" by people talking about the lettings agents being dodgy. This is from the guy who believed everything the lettings agent said.
Very tempted to tell them to stuff the house, it's too soon and I don't want to be rushed into renting a dump with people who are turning out to be arses. Won't go down well, just need to work out who else I could share with.

Not being funny here but if you are already getting into a row about this, these are not people with whom you want to share a house.............. AS for who else to share with, you are a Fresher at Uni. You'll meet a fair few people over the coming months.
