This turned up in my mailbox yesterday

"We'd like to keep you up to date
Hello ****,

We want you to make the most of your Sky package. But we've noticed that you've chosen not to receive marketing emails.

This means we can't let you know about the latest offers and news relevant to you. If you're happy to receive updates from us, it's easy to do, just let us know and we'll change your marketing preferences.

We won't bombard you with marketing or share your details with other companies for them to contact you about their products and services. And if you change your mind in the future, you'll be able to opt out at any time.

Thank you for being a Sky customer.

The Sky Team."

Do they have an option not to receive marketing emails about not receiving marketing emails?

Vodafone don't. Every time they send me a marketing text I send a STOP message, as they suggest, back to them. Then they send me another text saying my preferences will be updated in 28 days. Then they keep sending me texts. This has been going on for months.

Burn down their HQ - it's the only way.

Or...

Delete the email and find something more important to worry about.

I just set a junk mail filter in my email client. Anything like that is instantly deleted. The more you respond to 'direct marketing' the more you seem to get...

Add a forward to jeremy.darroch@bskyb.com on the filter before it gets junked.

That is probably in breach of the Data Protection Act (we've considered sending similar emails in the past and been advised not to) so I would forward it on to the Information Commissioners office and are them to investigate.

Exactly this.

So much fuss over a single email. I can see it being a problem if you were receiving 2 - 3 emails a day, but a random email just to remind you that you could possibly get more from your subscription?

How is this "so much fuss"? Regardless of the frequency of emails received, they have meaningfully sent a marketing message despite the OP expressing his wish to not receive marketing correspondance from them. I don't imagine the OP was the only person to receive this email either, we have laws to prevent this sort of thing.

I think it's good that when people start threads about their minor irritations, that other people take the trouble to post to remind them that the irritations are only minor.

Is it really such a big deal to flex your mouse hand a few mm, and click delete? Jesus wept, it's hardly an ordeal is it.

laugh I'm sure the OP clicked delete immediately anyway, I know I do when I get stuff through like this.

Indeed

I will never understand how people can find the energy to post on threads that they think are about subjects that don't matter. There are hundreds of threads on PH that I think don't matter, but I've never felt inclined to post on any of them.

Because they don't matter.

yes

I had an unsubscribing session the other day. About 50% of the co.s I unsubscribed from have sent me "Did you really mean it?" e-mails. bugs me but just deleted them and got on with life. If they send me another next month though I shall upgrade my position to "stty e-mail sent in reply."

I really am not stressed by the email, I just thought it was one of those amusing WTF moments in life. If sky choose to spend their profits on marketing departments who come up with this nonsense.......

Awaits the next mail telling him subscriptions have gone up silly

By posting this, you prove that this thread matters.tongue out

Anyway, people need to post about how trivial and banal these things are to counter the frothy-mouthed loons who think you need to advise government agencies and your lawyers because you got some junk email.
It matters to ME (a bit), but I'm not the one complaining that it doesn't matter. What I don't get is the people to whom it doesn't matter, why are they posting on a thread that doesn't matter to THEM? (Unless it's just to experience the joy that comes from criticising other people?)
