The Serpent with Eight Heads
Discussion
Antiques roadshow tomorrow.
Taking the day off, to go visit it.
I apologise if the thread title makes you feel self conscious JAYB. (joking of course)
Im taking something to the roadshow which appears to be exceedingly old old. Its probably just ten years old and coffee stained. I know nothing about it. Don't want to spend all day queueing to see various different specialistbuffoons boffins. Each has their own queue, which you have to.... queue in for ages. To get to them. Hence only taking 2 things.
Its a book, seems to be made from cloth.
Its entitled "The Serpent with Eight Heads"

Quite small, a little longer than a phone. Would be useful as toilet paper, about the right size for a good wipe.
"Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 9" it says.
Its less than 30 pages. Each page has two sides of cloth, as it were. So its 50-60 sheets thick.
Some pictures are colour, mostly in black ink.
Im interested in its value. Not to sell, Im just interested. It was gifted to me by my late grandmother, whose chinese/japanese things always fascinated me.
The other thing Im taking, Im taking to gauge the interest of the expert. Im happy with the price I paid, as a collector, dont mind if Im told its worth a fiver. But am very curious as to what response I'll get. A film prop. I like it immensely. Just a small fedora worn by the indiana jones puppet in the mine cart chase scene from the film Temple of Doom. I expect they shall scoff at it. Fools gold etc, as its not 500 years old. I like film and memorabilia so to me its special.
If there are any busty blonde japanese fairy tale cloth book experts on PH, I will be happy to let you sit on my lap whilst I read the book to you
No men in wigs please. I will spot you.
Ive been to the roadshow once before. Really enjoyed it. Fiona Bruce is taller than a giraffe on stilts, you would need to run a mile to escape if she was drunk and about to fall over.

There is a chance, admittedly a small chance, that your little book could be worth eleventy bazillion pounds.
It could be worth bugger all but it's nice to dream.

I bought a gold coin once. Half sovereign, not especially big, heavy or valuable. It could be worth bugger all but it's nice to dream.

But (young at the time) it was like owning all the treasure in the Goonies
Like that. Only more Japanese and clothy.

I love the Goonies.
Particularly the chubby kid and the little japanese kid with the gadgets.
I'm curious to know about editions 1 - 8 of the cloth books and then how many there are after volume 9.
Hopefully gangly Fiona will have all the answers tomorrow.
Id guess its worth twenty quid.Particularly the chubby kid and the little japanese kid with the gadgets.

They may have printed hundreds of thousands, or a few million.
To help small japanese kids sleep, with bedtime stories of 8 headed serpents.
I'll post up tomorrow, whatever it is that I am told.
Place your bets, place your bets. How much do you reckon its worth

Closest to roadshow valuation without going over (their figure) wins.
Fortunately everyone isnt filmed. Only the most interesting items are taken to the filming table, then filmed again for the show.
Goonies was awesome. Chunk is now a solicitor www.cohengardnerlaw.com/about

I wonder what the roadshow folk will say.
Probably "Look Out, Fiona the giraffe is coming this way!!"
The inner cover markings on mine are slightly different.
I dont read japanese, but if that is a first edition, then mine isnt.
Other books, printed in english on the back cover, include:
The Silly Jelly-Fish
My Lord Rag-o-Rice
The Wonderful Tea Kettle
The Boy Who Drew Cats
The last one I like the sound of. Thrilling up until the last page, id imagine!

That's unlikely at his age.Pixel Pusher said:

The roadshow was enjoyable.
My rag book was given a value by a chap in the at the miscellaneous section...
If I sold it, I could take the money and buy...
Dinner at a restaurant, a steak for one
With the right buyer, dinner for two. No drinks.
In his opinion.
Chap was more interested in the hat. He tried hard to get me to discuss it on camera, but having seen others with 3 cameras and lighting in their face, f
k that!
Lots of odd stuff was being carried by hopeful looking owners. Interesting strange looking articles. One lady IIRC (didnt hear the value, but was told by someone else) next to us had a ring valued at £55k and a broach at £14k, I think!
Other banter with people included a story about someone who, on having a small item valued at £40k or similar (different day) left the road show, went immediately to the bank and deposited it in a safety deposit box not realising its value.
Good day out. As tickets are free, worth going if you have clobber with some history next time they are in your neck of the woods
Just don't take any 100 year old cloth books!
