What is with Jeans sizing?!
Discussion
So I'm in the market for some new denim, very council - I know. Quite like the look of the Boss (brand, not gentleman I work for) stuff so I pop into a local shop yesterday where they have only a couple of styles, Orange in '58' style and Black in 'Maine2'. Try both on in a 34/32 and whilst both fit fine, the relaxed fit of the 58 is a little too relaxed and I don't like the colour of the Maine2.
Fast forward to today, I pop into John Lewis at lunch time, they don't have any Orange but carry 'Maine' and 'Maine2', both 'regular fit', in a variety of colours. Trying on the Maine, again in 34/32 they are far too small, very different to yesterdays pair. Annoying, but perhaps 'Maine' and 'Maine2' are significantly different - but no the 'Maine2' are exactly the same. Since they don't have either style I like in a 36, I leave, irritated.
I can understand variance between brands, annoying as it is. I can even tolerate variance between different cuts of the same brand, but seriously the same brand/style having such a difference is infuriating. Anyone else find sizing a complete pain in the arse, or did I really manage to gain a stone in 24 hours?! This is why I won't shop online for clothes.

Yeah its annoying that the same size can seem to have quite a large variance. I can never seem to find any that fit me anyway so it doesnt really matter. The legs are always way too skinny for the waist. Even going for relaxed fit doesnt work so I really hate the skinny jean trend that seems prevalent.
Pretty standard these days, unfortunately, I have 4 pairs of jeans bought from the same place at the same time, same style same size, 2 pair black, 2 pair blue, all very different fits even the waist sizes are different.
It might have been best to just pick up another pair the same size and see how you get on.

This is a subject I have a certain amount of knowledge of given I am obsessed with finding the "correct" fit of Levi's - I frequently go over to the US and can't resist buying them given how cheap they are; the only issue is my weight keeps going down so I started with 34w, then 33w, and on my last trip bought four pairs of 32's. I know find that the 31w fits me perfectly, so now I am thinking about teaming up with Arsenal Morris from the shoe thread to open a levi/addidas eBay shop
If anybody is in the market for 32/32 Levis I might be able to sort you out....

I've no shame in admitting I've packed on a bit of weight over the last 2-3 years. My jeans size has been 36W, 32L for as long as I can remember, and all of my jeans are that size. Recently, I've found a couple of pairs that have plenty of slack, yet the rest I struggle to get into, what's that about?

Oh boo hoo How my heart bleeds for you with your weight loss problem. (Unless it's a medical condition of course, in which case I apologise.)If anybody is in the market for 32/32 Levis I might be able to sort you out....
But I'm sure I'm not alone - only have to drive past a chippie and catch the smell to go up a waist size. You think you have problems getting jeans to fit?
I used to take 36/36 jeans all the time. My MiL bought me a pair that were certainly labelled 36 waist 36 leg, but they must have been 32/32.
I wore them once on Christmas Day - before dinner - for comedy effect.
It's why I buy such a proportion of my clothes at Next. Apart from the fact that the are one of the only mainstream retailers that make trousers long enough for me, their sizing is IME very consistent.

With Hood (motorbike) jeans they actually say on their website:
Hood Jeans waist comes up a true size; if I tell you how we measure the waist this might help you to compare them with a pair of your own. Firstly we lay the jeans flat and do up the stud; we then measure across the waist. Our size 34 would measure 17 inches across, double this up, gives you the 34 inch waist.
Not sure why all jeans can't be measured like this, it's not like women's sizes of 12 vs 14, it's a frikkin' length!
