So how much do you drink?
Discussion
For the past 2 Saturdays in a row I have been out drinking until 7am, with copious amounts of alcohol, too much to remember, however it had been well over a month since I last went out drinking and I won't probably do anything like that for quite some time now, I'm not a regular drinker, occasionally have a small bottle or two of Peroni on a Friday night but that's about it.
I am a very lucky person though, I don't suffer from hangovers at all, I can get up the next day perfectly fine, worst thing I ever get is a bit of tiredness and that is only if it's a really late one, my friends hate me for it

Kudos to those sharing their problems, that's the first step to getting it sorted.
I'm 43 and drink less than I used to but probably still too much. Almost exclusively beer, the odd glass of wine (I like wine, but I drink it like beer and then the inevitable happens ) and pretty much zero spirits (maybe the odd white Russian on holiday).
A few years ago I would be polishing off 12 bottles of Peroni a week in the house (usually dry Mon-Thu though), plus a Friday night in the local with 4-5 pints, plus any nights out/friends over etc. which would inevitably mean 6-8 drinks. This was with nearly zero exercise.
I'm 5'11" and although my weight had been a pretty steady 11.5-12st since my 20s it was beginning to creep up, reaching 13st at one point. A diagnosis of high blood pressure was the final straw so I resolved to do something about it.
I started cycling, not much at first but now regularly doing at least 4 hours per week excluding any commuting which can add 2-4 hours if the weather/work permits. I guess you could call me 'a cyclist' now. There appear to be quite a few of us on this thread, it's almost as if there is some kind of link between beer and bikes...
Anyway, I cut down a bit but realistically this is probably what a normal week looks like.
In the house: 6-8 Peroni, mostly over the weekend but maybe one after dinner on a sunny weekday evening.
Friday and/or Saturday evening: Pub, probably 3-4 pints of bitter, but only 1 or 2 if I've got a bigger ride the next day.
Post-gym lunch on a Sunday: 1 or 2 bottles of 5% ABV, usually.
So excluding any events (of which there seem to be many!) that's probably 20-25 units a week - "danger" according to all the blurb.
If there's a BBQ or party any weekend then I'm probably talking more like 30-35 units which would earn me a stern look from my doctor I'm sure.
The thing is, my exercise motto is 'ride to imbibe' and I'm definitely burning off at least the calories I'm drinking. The proof of this is my weight which is comfortably back down under 12st without me changing anything else (diet etc.) and that is despite the muscle I have definitely gained in the past 3 or 4 years.
Probably still not good news for my liver etc. but I no longer get out of breath playing football with my son and with the hypertension meds my BP is now down in the 'almost normal' zone. I have 'benign essential hypertension' apparently, not much else I can do about it. I did give up booze for a few weeks to check and it made no real difference.

Yep, MapMyRun says I burn 500 odd calories on a 2.8 mile run.
Cycling is a ball ache and you have to be out for much longer than if you went for a run or even just a nice brisk walk.

Cycling can burn as many calories as anything else, you just need to be fit. Riding at my max for 1 hour (which I could only do for 1 hour) would be around 1500 cals. But I do lots of rides that are longer than burn around 1000-1200 per hour for a few hours, obviously the longer the ride the less it will be as you cannot sustain as high intensity. I did a 9 hour ride a few weeks back and burned circa 8500 calories.
My knees are screwed, so no running (don't like it anyway) and no longer rides (9 hours ). However, a few weeks of rides have reminded me how much more I get out of an hour or more usually two on the mountain bike than just 5+ miles walking a day. Coming out of 5 months or so of just walking and having less legs than I expected having not gone into hibernation reminded me of that.
Problem is, the liquid painkiller then undoes most of the good work .

Well that's a week without a beer and it was t too hard. Wife still hates me but I've lost at least a kilo and knocked almost a minute off my 10mile TT PB
