Will heat or ice help my back?
Either can do. Try heat first as it's usually better with muscle spasm. Lots of good advice already re painkillers and getting moving.Find a private physio and get them to sort it out
ETA: If you're local (I'm in Hanham, Bristol today) I can get you in this afternoon

My sympathies Glenred, I am an orthopaedic surgeon and here's my advice.1) Take 1g paracetamol and 400mg Ibuprofen, if no better then in 4 hours take Solpadeine (ask chemist for) and ibupofen. Continue regularly tablets as stated on boxes.
2) Rest, if neccessary all day, all night etc etc
3) try to mobilise as the pain settles, you will do no harm.
4) watch for problems with your urination (can't go, have accidents) If this happens, and it's rare then call an ambulance.
5) Wait,
6) wait some more and call the boss, you may need a week or two off work.
Sciatica is a loose term for neuralgic pain in the sciatic nerve and is therefore not limited to disc disease. It can be inflammatory, degenerative, traumatic, muscle spasm etc etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sciatica
It is self limiting and chronic-relapsing in most cases, but isolated in others.
Personally I'd crash on the couch and eat tablets whilst the G/F (and mine actually is a gorgeous nurse) does the sympathy work and general TLC
Will.

Ouch, I feel for you, my Mum has had sciatica in the past (she hasn't been in any major pain for 3 years now!)
She ended up having physio, and some weird machine that moved her legs, the name on it is "Back Life" so I'm guessing that's the company she bought it from.
Definitely get to the doctor for the good painkillers, at the height of her sciatica my Mum had to be driven to the GP by my Dad because she was in so much pain that all she could do was cry

Thanks Doc , G/F is on her way to chemist now to pick up pills and i am going to lie here and count the carpet pile until she returns, doc how long will this last until i can stand up straight and walk around??
Impossible to say. "How long is a piece of string?"Perhaps you'll crawl to bed tonight and rise stiffly tomorrow morning..... perhaps you'll need five days padding around the house with leg pain before you're settled...
Sorry, it's up to the Big Guy. In my experience poeple have days of pain, not weeks......
order a Wiii from www.iwoot.com (next day delivery)

Your GF wont be able to get codeine based pain killers over the counter as far as im aware they are prescription only.
They have side effects and are habit forming so stick to the softer stuff unless you really need to use the strong stuff.
Co-codamol and Solpadeine have codeine in and you can get those from Boots etc. Was the only thing that touched my wisdom tooth pain a few years back. In that case they seem to act a lot faster than Ibuprofen, but wear off more quickly. I suspect the anti-inflammatory element of Ibuprofen will help more in your case (dunno, I'm an engineer). They have side effects and are habit forming so stick to the softer stuff unless you really need to use the strong stuff.
Had a trapped nerve in my neck once (well, twice), and the adrenaline reaction to it seemed to only make things worse. It absolutely tired me out for a couple of days.

I am in agony stretched out on the floor in my office, Yesterday I had one of my nephews in one arm and bent over to pick the other one up and did my back in. Now I cant move it has got worse and worse been taking anadin extra but I cant even stand up today and the pain goes all down my left leg. Has anyone else had this? How do i stop it? and how long will it take to heal?
This is agony...
If it's sciatica it could last anything from a few weeks to a few years. If it's a trapped nerve it could last anything from a few weeks to a few years, I've had back trouble for over twenty years now so it never goes away completely. This is agony...
Best thing in the short term is Ibuprofen, you can get 400mg tabs so you would only need to take one at a time. You could alternatively take a 200mg one with a Paracetamol tablet, you need to keep on taking them for a day or so as they work as an anti inflammatory.
If you can get to the doctors I find Diclofenac work about the best.
Good luck

I agree with the Doc.
I had something very similar, and I was absolutely prostrate, couldn't move at all without severe pain. I thought I would never walk again. After a while I found I could roll left or right if I kept my legs, back and head aligned. Never wet myself or anything like that.
My advice relates to afterwards. You have to watch your posture, particularly while sitting, and especially while driving. If you are in a GT3, or a Jag S-Type Sport for example,;), you will be ok, if your seats have poor lumbar support get a small towel and roll it up tight, then put it behind your back so the ends come out at the sides and support not only your spine but your sides. Be careful not to get overweight. Do back curls, not sit ups certainly at first. Go swimming and do lengths. Then the problem will not recur.
As to expecting the NHS to sort you out, forget it. Some things they are really good at but this isn't one of them.
