Thanks for your messages. Unfortunately he has severe PVL ( Brain Damage caused by cysts in the white matter of his brain which appeared about two weeks after birth) The outlook isn't good as its likely he will have some form of Cerebal Palsy, but with a brain injury time will tell. He's a lovely little fella though and other than that he is putting on weight and breathing and swallowing unaided which is a relief.

All the best to you and your family, sounds like you're going through the ringer at the moment.Edited by Zyp on Tuesday 4th February 22:51

Bloody hell. The very best of luck, I'm certain he's a cracking lad. All the very best wishes Obiwonkeybloke to you and your wife and little boy.
My son was 7 weeks early and 5lb 1oz. Dropped down to 4.14 but quickly up again.
Got his Masters in computer game design a couple of years ago and his girlfriend is expecting their first child.
And he's taller than me!

The desalts and bradycardias will settle with age, 35-36 weeks should see those settle, but given the omniflow they may not take off the monitors for a while yet. Really pleased to hear the feeds etc are going well - so many mums say they are keen to BF and then do nothing about it in terms of expressing or regular BFing. Pleased to hear you've had her out of the cot and settling with you, it all sounds like its going well so far.
Thank you Hugh. Just back again and a very happy daddy. The last 48 hrs she has come off the omniflow, and off any O2 support at all. She's out of the incubator and into a heated cot. She was on an apnoea monitor last night but doesn't need it anymore. She's started breast feeding but needs some pretty serious topping up from expressing.
My wife is exhausted but the support from the nurses in SCBU has been utterly faultless.

A wee update to this thread. Little one is still very dinky at 14lbs at 9 months but she`s unstoppable, strong as an ox and as confident as her elder brother is shy.
In other news my wife is 2 months pregnant!
All three of ours went through SCBU, as my wife is diabetic, which tends to lead to big, early babies who then go through sugar withdrawal as their blood sugars drop back to normal from the typically higher level of their mother. In other news my wife is 2 months pregnant!
Should your second go through SCBU for any reason, I can suggest, unless you want to be glared at by every woman in the place, whether a mother or a nurse, not to repeat the conversation that I had...
Nurse: Aw, isn't she a beautiful little thing.
Me: I bet you say that about all the babies!
Nurse: But they are all beautiful!!!
Me: No they're not! Look at that one! It's hideous!
Nurse, wife, other mothers, other nurses etc... GLACIAL GLARE!
It was hideous though. Think ET in a nappy!
