Mrs Buzzer and I spent Sunday and Monday in a posh hotel in the Peak District…

On Monday evening we had a meal in the hotel, I had a duck and Palma ham starter and fillet steak for the main.

Around 3:00 in the morning I got up feeling unwell, spent 10 mins on the toilet. Didn’t sleep that well, felt a bit sick. Next morning still felt sick, managed not to be, more toilet trips, no breakfast, just lay on the bed.

We decided to head home, I felt too ill to drive. Two and a half hours in the Audi TT made me wish we hadn’t specified the sports suspension!! Go home at 2:00 pm and went straight to bed. An hour later I got up and was violently sick… several times. Within an hour I felt much better, albeit very weak… still a bit rough today.

So, the question is…. Was this food poisoning?

If so, what do I do?

Drink plenty of fluids, you're obviously well enough now to get up and post so I doubt it will get worse but if it does contact your doctor.

Sounds like food poisoning, but if it doesn't get better soon, then a visit to the GP might be in order.

Yes, now come on, everyone knows that, it's to improve the place don't you know, make it easier to know where to post things or to justify some coding monkeys having jobs....

Probably viral - norovirus etc. Easily transmissable. Might be worth letting the restaurant know so that they can check that no one else has it. Unlikely to be bacterial (salmonella, e coli 0157 etc and other scary stuff) as sounds like it is getting better.

Plenty of fluids, think about Dioralyte if you can't keep food down. If you cannot keep fluids down and having profuse diarrhoea, you may have to go to A&E to get IV fluids put up if more than 24h since you can keep stuff down. Don't go to the GP without warning them first about the problem - this stuff is really transmissable and kills babies and grannies, so often people just go for reassurance whilst merrily spreading their germs everywhere. It should get better on its own.

Standard practice as far as Public Health issues is to send off a diarrhoea (if present) sample to ascertain the nature of the "bug". If a food poisoning incident, Public Health will certainly be in contact with the hotel - they tend to take this sort of stuff very seriously, and you may not be the only one...

True. Bear in mind it can take 3 weeks to get viral stool cultures back, and they are often negative. Nasty bacterial stuff tends to come back quicker.
