why do you want a bells and whistles one?

I have the ft2, but tbh all the machines in the gym pick up the chest strap anyway so use that.

All you want to know is your heart rate surely?

Well the better ones use some pretty awesome software that help with training zones. And if you train to a goal and achieve it you receive stars! Or if you train lots you get a trophy!!!!

The ft80 records weight training as well.

All of them can download through star software online which is pretty useful. I'd just get to get some opinions from people that have one of them....

What are you going to be using it for? For £100 less you can get a Garmin GPS jobber that will record heart rate, time spent in different zones, beeps when you go out of the zones, etc.
I did use a polar heart rate monitor, but I have a feeling my mp3 player used to interfere with it as I regularly went above 240bpm!

Ill be using it help with cv training (outside of the gym) .
Much prefer polar as the watches themselves are much smaller than garmin.
I have a friend with the ft60, she loves it but I'm wondering if I should get the same one or slightly better.
I think the star training programme and the watch itself will help with motivation. I train and have done for many years on weights. Other than HIT would like to start incorporating some longer runs into training so will use this watch to work within training zones.

I have just ordered a Polar RS300X to use for running and spinning.

It has better memory than the FT series - I think most of them just show the current session, no history etc. Also it has more of their fitness tests built in which help it get a more accurate calculation for calories, and is compatible with flowlink to upload to the polar personal trainer online.

First time I've used one, will be interesting training in the different zones and seeing what results I get - I think at the moment I'm training at too high intensity, need to back it off and go for longer to loose the weight. More swimming, running and less spin sessions. In the spin sessions the instructors often refer to "you should be at XX% of your max HR" so will be good for that too.

Hopefully it'll be here tomorrow and I've got this week off work so should be able to try it out and see where i'm at!

Cheers ill have a look at that one.

Would need to know more but from the sound of it changing the intensity of cv to loose weight sounds very flawed. Ill post a link up tomorrow (on mobile at the moment) that I'm sure will help.

Would be good to have a look.

My understanding...
If you work at lower intensity a higher percentage of calories burned come from fat. (i read 85%)
BUT you burn less calories in a given time.

If you work at a higher intensity a higher percentage of calories come from Carbohydrate. (Only 15% from fat)
AND you burn more calories in a given time.

So my logic goes...
Working at a lower intensity for longer will burn the same calories, and they will come from fat rather than carbohydrate.

Now I'm sure it's very complex... and the carbs you burn at high intensity then can't get turned into fat if they are not used, so one argument would be just burn as much as possible.

I had several polars and they were very good except for battery life. Either the watch or strap was going flat every couple of months - quite frustrating. I use a Suunto now - it looks way better, gives pretty much the same info and no issues with battery life at all after 18 months.
Polars are compatible with the equipment at local gym but often gave, admittedly only slightly, different readings to the watch. confused Suunto isn't so I have no confusion and accept what it says.

More info about Polar personal trainer.

http://www.heartratemonitor.co.uk/polarpersonaltra...

The FT80 can upload data.

You need the Polar Flowlink which is £40... bit expensive, should come with the watch I think.
