I've recently experienced heartburn. Prior to this I didn't know much about it.

I just want to make sure people are aware how serious it can be.

Heartburn = acid reflux = stomach acid rising in to your esophagus.

Your esophagus is not designed for stomach acid. Long term heartburn can cause your cells to mutate and cause C#####.

This isn't some theoretical research paper finding, any doctor will confirm this.

If you do suffer with heartburn please see a doctor and change your diet/lifestyle. Cut out the acidic and fatty foods, alcohol, smoking etc. Do not eat within 3 hours of laying down (this is important). Eat smaller portions and do not drink lots during a meal. Otherwise your stomach fills and this helps acid rise. Sleeping on your left (not right) side helps, also elevating the top of your bed (yes really, gravity etc).

I hope this helps prevent even just one person receiving bad news in the future.

PPIs are fine short term or on/off but not good continuously for 2+ years as they can mess with your magnesium and B12 absorption. Might also affect kidney function, can't remember.

Anyone on PPIs long term I'd suggest asking your GP to do annual blood tests, including your electrolytes (magnesium, sodium etc), B12 and kidney/liver. Low B12 can really **** you up. It's very important for nerves and DNA.

I’m not sure if it’s the same but what happens is sometimes i’ll wake a couple of hours after sleep regurgitating but it’s not food just pure vomit. The silent retching wakes me up.

Went to the docs years ago who gave me some tablets to take in the morning.

I don’t get pain or anything just the horrible reflux.
You may want to Google "silent reflux".

Good to flag this OP.

PPI have some well known long term issues. Just Google them.

My reflux was so bad I had an operation for it. I now have a linx device which keeps my stomach valve shut. When I eat the magnetic beads of the device separate and allow food down. This completely solved the issue, albeit I tend to eat slower than normal now and some foods, mostly dry rice can get stuck temporarily. But it's a small price to pay.

Worth checking out refluxuk who did my implant. They are experts in this field.
The thing putting me off Linx is you can't have 3T strength MRIs anymore? I think it's limited to 1.5T?

If anyone is suffering from reflux and struggling with Omeprazole or other PPI's, I would very much recommend Apple Cider Vinegar tablets as an alternative.

They will change your life.
Reading https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/apple-cider-v... it seems that there is little research into this though, no?
Possible negative side effects including indigestion, throat irritation and low potassium.

Any research/studies you know to recommend these?
This says there is not a great deal of research into Apple Cider Vinegar for GERD. Perhaps unsurprising for a natural remedy:

https://www.verywellhealth.com/apple-cider-vinegar...

I found Omeprazole worked well for me initially, but over time it became less and less effective.

I tried drinking apple cider vinegar, but gave up almost immediately. It’s vile.

I now take two of these a day and have not needed any antacid tablets in years:

They are more effective for me than the PPIs ever were. You need to ditch antacids altogether when you try it as that defeats the purpose. You want stomach acidity because that closes the esophagus.

Oh and only buy the tablets with ‘the mother’ which is part of the fermentation process. I have no idea why, but these are the ones that work for me.

But most people with GERD don't have a properly functioning LES (valve).
