Can anyone suggest anything else I can take apart from Ibruprofen and paracetamol (gargling with the soluble stuff as well as tablets - but no more than a total of 8 per 24 hrs) lots of fluids and ice cream?

I can't get to see my own GP but 2 pharmacists have said analgesic throat sprays and the above, and a doctor friend says the above too. Oh and its been confirmed as tonsillitis by 2 sisters a pain nurse and an ENT surgeon (then I got sent home)

I feel like ste, am really tired but just not being able to sleep (except for day one when I started going down with it and I slept from 11am to 6pm and then 10pm until the following morning) and really fed up now.

It all started on Tuesday.

I'm sat on MSN to a friend suffering with the same thing and we're at the end of our tethers frown

Not a doctor, but I've been given medical sanction to mix Nurofen Plus (ibuprofen + codeine) and Co-dydramol (paracetamol + codeine) since ibuprofen and paracetamol are of different families - provided that doesn't involve more than the recommended dose of codeine or paracetamol.
Thanks for that - I have also been told I can have all three (not at the same time - take them 2 hrs apart) to keep the pain/fever/aches.... away and not have the ups and downs.

It just isn't touching it at the moment though. God I feel sorry for myself.

According to a book I have, The Practical Home Doctor (published sometime in the 1930s) it says:

".....they (tonsils) should be painted regularly with a special throat paint of iodine and gycerine, called Mandl's paint after the long-dead French physician who discovered this healing and soothing preparation."

Later, regarding sore throats it says that they can be relieved by using a cold compress. Wrap a cold damp towel round your neck, then wrap a dry towel over that.
Sounds like I might stick to the whiskey suggestion.....hehe

That might be an idea.

The book also mentions about using arsenic for anaemia, opium for diarrhoea and heroin for a difficult cough.
Sounds fab thumbup

I'll have some of that thanks.

What I was told too. Can't go near asprin now though unless I'm ill. Have permanently associated the taste of soluble asprin with feeling like death.
Did you used to take it for fun before???

Just waiting for the ibruprofen to kick in again...

Got any friends who have had bad backs/operations recently? They might have some prescription strength stuff lying around... Not that you should take this bad advice of course.

My wife's Codeine Phosphate that she didn't need after her caesarian was just, lovely. You might need to google 'recreational dose' but that's all part of the fun.

DISCLAIMER: Do not take other people's expired medicines. Its silly. And dangerous. -love from captainzep's lawyer.
My mother has plenty -shame she's 200 miles away frown and I would have got some from people in the know except I had to go home before I could see them.

I have asked an A and E nurse if she can get me some - but apparently they don't keep it on site because of smack heads and the such. Tsk.

But yeah - prescription drugs rule!

Suffering is one word to describe it...

I'm now intolerable and grumpy too.

Really sorry to hear this. Tonsillitis genuinely is horrific! Its like a naked flame searing the inside of your throat. And is caused by lack of protein to the tonsils. Do you want my MSN id?
I'm not sure you would want to talk to me tongue out

I put myself to sleep at lunch time and finally got up just before 9pm. I might go back to bed again in a min.

Sod this, I'm going to the walk in centre tomorrow. Tuesday to Sat and feel no better - do you think I'll get a prize of some nice antibiotics now??!
