Poorest refereeing performance I have seen in a long time, the ref is hardly even bothering to keep up with the game, he is 30 yards away from play most of the time. The penalty was dubious, looked more shoulder to shoulder than anything and then to send him off....
Vidal should have been a yellow, Vidal holding on to Ramsey's leg whilst on the floor, didn't merit a free kick andTheo's penalty.
It's an embarrassing performance from the officials with half an hour still to play.

Thats some Grade A bullst right there. Bad luck, was enjoying the game too. I guess it was denying a goalscoring opportunity, but then why yellow first? Feckin Ref's, at least it's not just the EPL that has them.
OK, here's why.Prior to this season, any offence that denied a clear and obvious goal scoring opportunity was a red. If it was in the area, it was a penalty too.
As of this season, if the offence occurs in the box so it's a penalty, it's a yellow if the ref thinks it was a genuine attempt to win or play the ball that went wrong. However, it's still a red if it was a deliberate act to stop the chance.
So the ref obviously, from behind, though Kolchelny was attempting to get the ball and fouled the attacker in the process. But the 4th official had a better view and brought it to the ref's attention.
In the end the right decision, it was a clear push with no attempt to win the ball. And no doubt if was a clear and obvious goal scoring opportunity.

...lots of correct stuff ...
Oh Im not arguing it wasn't a red, but the fact that he gave a yellow first and then backtracked on it was bizarre and frankly, at such a high level, embarrasing. Apparently it's the ref's first game in a European knock out tie. If he had gone straight red it would be fine. It's not as if the penalty wasn't enough punishment - but the laws of the game are what they are and eventually the right decision was given. My annoyance is more that it ruined what, at that point, was a good game.
I dropped my Emirates season tix back in 2007.
Nights like tonight remind me why I did. I actually feel angry.
Anyone remember Wenger proclaiming they would dominate having just won the FA Cup with Viera's last kick of the ball.
He then promptly dismantled the team........downhill since then.....

His inability to motivate and his total lack of tactical nous became obvious the moment Bergkamp left. Many other managers would have used the resources better that he's squandered since 2006.Nights like tonight remind me why I did. I actually feel angry.

It's not unheard of for a ref to give a decision, then get alerted by one of the assistants that the decision may be wrong, and change it. It's actually quite good refereeing, and shows a lack of ego.
I agree on the second part, in fact it is refreshing to see assistants behind the goal actually doing something. It's just that in the circumstances the 'wrong' decision would actually have been better for the game so it's a fine bloody time for referee's to start being all egoless and communicating. Anyway, I don't think anyone should look at the result after that and be too harsh - the tie was fecked in the first game, and tonight I thought Arsenal did well until the sending off. They did collapse again, of course, but at that stage they were well and truly sunk. As a neutral it's a shame (if not a little funny) if this is Arsene's last CL game, ending the way it did.

It's not good refereeing at all. I don't dispute the ultimate decision. However, the referee should have consulted the goal line official in the first place. He was too eager to get a yellow card out and could of taken his time and consulted with his colleague first.

I've gone from frustration, to anger to resentment. My thoughts are such I don't care how he leaves as long as he leaves.Gassing Station | Football | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
