Couple if problems for us to solve....
Belgium did well at defending. 6 or 7 players back in the box at key times.... And we couldn't break that down. Need to find better ways.
Out defence was shocking for the two goals.
Pickford is always a brain fart waiting to happen. It feels like the defenders know this.
Dunk was foolish for the second. But who the fk was watching play/Tielemanns. It looked like the rest of the defence were sleep walking.
They got caught out by Brazil too.
Hard to see who could play back there and give confidence.
Chilwell was poor in both games.
Dunk and Chilwell shouldn’t be anywhere near the England team. Belgium did well at defending. 6 or 7 players back in the box at key times.... And we couldn't break that down. Need to find better ways.

On the latest England showings, I would keep Bellingham, Toney and Saka up front, with Foden, Rice and Mainoo in midfield, Shaw, Maguire, Stones and Trippier or TAA in defence and still have Pickford in goal. If Kane is available, then he would take the place of Toney.
The reason I would stick with Saka, is because he has scored 11 times in 32 games for England.
I would like to see us using more width, because I do wonder how many of these players are capable of making cross pitch, raking passes.

Judging by his interview he has a 3-digit IQ, so no.
He's a massive talent, and speaking as he does at just 20yrs old. Amazing really.
Indeed. He's a massive talent, and speaking as he does at just 20yrs old. Amazing really.
His maturity and confidence in front of the cameras is almost as impressive as his ability on the pitch. He was clearly just ticking over in the friendly matches which makes sense with the big matches for both club and country imminent.
He is much more talented than either Rooney or Beckham.

England squad announcement today at 1pm.
One of the best English squads available ever, almost everyone available (apart from a recovering Luke Shaw?). Squad selection relativey straightforward but can Gareth get the balance of the team selection right?
Not convinced personally. Lots of attacking talent that could easily play for any club team in world football (Kane, Bellingham, Foden, Palmer, Rice, Saka) but can you really say anything like the same for our defence and GK?One of the best English squads available ever, almost everyone available (apart from a recovering Luke Shaw?). bang on. we have the firepower to destroy lesser teams, but in a more even match up, i think the back 5 will let us down.SWoll said:

Defensively we may be vulnerable but again we have Walker and Trippier who are both world class wingbacks and Stones has experience in playing in a world class team, albeit not much this season. World class DM cover in Rice (in tandem with Bellingham). On paper, for me it is one of the best English squads I've seen in the last 35 odd years.A good manager would focus on the squads core strength: attack as a best form of defence.

Walker and Trippier are both getting on now and I'd question them being considered world class at this point, especially Trippier. The centre of our defence and GK are a bigger concern for me though.
We should do well in the group against weaker opponents but as soon as we come up against a better team it's going to a different story, especially with Southgate in charge.

We don't have one of those though, we have Southgate.

I know todays announcement is for the 'big' squad but the rumours are this morning that Gareth is going to pick Shaw. He's played a grand total of 29 games this season, with only 12 in the Premiership.
Not a great plan.
And hasn't Kane picked up an injury?
The fact Shaw hasn't played since the start of Feb is more of a concern that total games I'd suggest? Not a great plan.
And hasn't Kane picked up an injury?
Kane has "back problems" apparently..

Well he certainly hasn't picked up a trophy. Not a great plan.

Walker I agree with you but Trippier world class? Not a hope in Hell. People forget he was rotting on the Spurs bench a scant few years ago when we were in desperate need of a LB, that's how crap he was.A good manager would focus on the squads core strength: attack as a best form of defence.

Defence is an issue for us outside of Stones. None of the other defenders have been great this season, and the keeper is also suspect. Both Shaw and Chilwell have had injury concerns. Who else can play left back? Lewis Hall?
Attacking and midfield is sorted, but rest is hit and miss.
Southgate will never set the world alight, but he will play not to lose games as its the best way to get through tournament football.
Lots of pre-announcement news being leaked on BBC:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/live/cx9957jp...
Sterling & Henderson out, some interesting ins including 4 from Palace, Branthwaite, Bowen, Mainoo, Toney & James Trafford.
Is it 7 to be culled or 6 for the final squad ?

He was a lot better after leaving you and joining Atletico and initially Newcastle though? Those days are well behind him now I agree.Slowboathome said:
We really miss Shaw when he's not there.
I know Maguire gets a lot of flack but Walker, Stones, Maguire and Shaw isn't an awful international defence. But the back-up options aren't great.
Bang average. Stone's best form this season has been at DM, Walker past his best at 33, Shaw has been injured since February and Maguire is Maguire.I know Maguire gets a lot of flack but Walker, Stones, Maguire and Shaw isn't an awful international defence. But the back-up options aren't great.
Quarter Finals will be as far as we go IMHO, but will of course hope for more as always.
