Quoted. Just so it's easy to find at the end of the season.

I'll quote you quoting that - for the same reason.

Good comparison. That was a reckless and insane spending spree, although getting 50m for Torres has proved to be the most astute piece of footballing business this century!
scratchchin

Surely Yeovil's purchase of Paddy Madden wins that award.

Languishing in Carlisle's reserves with a record of 2 goals in 32 appearances, Madden came on loan to Yeovil on a month's loan deal that was later turned into a permanent transfer. He scored 23 goals for Yeovil in 39 games including the opener at Wembley in the League One playoff final v Brentford, lifting my tiny side into the Championship.

His form has since won him a place in the Republic of Ireland full squad and he made his debut last week for his country.

All for £20,000.

Conversely, you could do a Liverpool, achieve FA; lose AVB and be left with all these "top" players and their 'top' wages... without a paddle, etc.

Same applies to your new found ambition with your new recruits for a podium finish, and/or silverware.

Buying all those players has at least guaranteed us 42 points.

Another one for posterity. You just never know.

Seriously though, in terms of the biggest failures in your club's history, where would not achieving anything rank?

The same applies to any side spending out to build for the future. I'm not sure what point you're making?

Whilst a part of me will miss comforting old crappy Spurs (really!) are you saying that we shouldn't even try? Any team can come unstuck - Leeds, Citeh last time out, you lot in the Champs league every year in the making up the numbers brigade, but surely having a go is the right thing to do? Weird logic.

As a Spurs fan for over 45 years, I cannot put into words my dismay when I read this type of post and the one above about making top four.

It makes me feel queasy.

In fact.....

I can only assume they still think you're keeping Bale.

I said previously to this comment that buying players doesn't necessarily guarantee success. The 70proof fella said "top four is easy" with your recent acquisitions.

As much of a shot to the arm your purchases are, I'm asking if such confidence is wise. You do appear to be doing a lot right, I'll give you that. How it pans out over a season is still a long way from realising. You do have a great tradition of bottling it...

At this point would it be fair to trot out that old chestnut..."It'll take a season to gel them into a team"?

AVB has been handed (comparitively) more money in one summer than any manager of Spurs ever and by quite some distance. The pressure on him to fulfill expectation is going to be huge. If he doesn't win something...anything...or at least 'look like' winning something (ie losing a cup final, coming 3rd in the EPL etc) within 18 months then he'll be gone.

But they do have to give him time to work out his plans when this amount of players come into the club all in the space of a couple of months.

With the money we've spent, we have to achieve top 4 otherwise financially we should have taken the money from Bale and just settled for mid table mediocrity.
