I watched on Sky Sports a couple of ex footballers and refs looking at this, and saying its a pen all day.

I am quite astonished, and I wish someone was there to ask the question, if this was in the Newcastle penalty area and Phillips is taking a shot, is it a freekick to Newcastle or a pen to West Ham.

Its not Gordon being clever or anything like that, Gordon challenges Phillips whilst out of possession of the ball, misses the ball, catches Phillips, I cannot for the life of me see how this is anything other than a West Ham freekick.

As long as you have different people ie refs, making decisions, those contentious decisions will be made (for ever). But if VAR was scrapped, fans would still argue a penalty decision was wrong if their team is on the wrong end of it so what's the difference? Now there's VAR, they can watch it again and again and they still believe they've been wronged (or it was the right decision if at the other end) ...
Absolutely, but I'd bloody forget about it a lot quicker !
Either way, it as brought in for clear and obvious errors, Arreola giving away a penalty by being punched in the face wasn't one,nor was Phillips on Sunday, so it's solved nothing the way it's being used presently.

Gordon doesn’t ‘hook’ Phillips’ leg. Gordon puts his leg between the ball and Phillips’ angle of backswing .
So that's a foul by Gordon.

How so, what contact did he make with KP?

It was a foul from behind without playing the ball via deliberate obstruction of the player in possession.

As said, if that is Phillips taking a shot down the other end, thats a penalty to Phillips.

I think Moyes got tactics wrong after he took Ant off and went too defensive that cost us the game IMO however,I have tried and tried to understand how that could have been deemed a foul by KP on Gordon, especially when they have the benefit of VAR and replay after replay..

For the life of me still can't see how that wasn't a deliberate attempt to stop him making a clearance by Gordon who made absolutely no attempt to play the ball and instead made a deliberate act of putting his leg across KP to impede him...... due to refs etc not ever actually playing the game perhaps? either that or my claret & blue tinted glasses frown

To be honest if thats the case, then if a player gets beyond you as a defender all you need to do is put your foot between their feet and let them trip on it - just do it from behind too - the outcome will then be a freekick to you as a defender because the attacker running away from you kicked your foot. Just sling your foot, leg, anything out there and let them fall over it and its your freekick.

I agree we have our tinted glasses on, but no one in their sane mind can think that was anything other than a freekick to Phillips.

Gordon's right foot is swinging in and contacts both the heel of KP's standing foot (his left) and also his right shin. He's nowhere near the ball and it's a missed tackle from behind. It's clear foul by Gordon on Phillips.

Good..........Lets hope Moyes don't decide to go all defensive at any point regardless of the score.

Only we could sign 50 million player as cover for our midfield and when our midfield lynchpin is out realise that’s he’s so st that he’s only good enough for the bench even then !!
Moyes needs to start Phillips at some point and give him proper minutes to get up to the PL pace or send him back now. It’s embarrassing all round, for the club, the manager and the player.
God knows what the reaction will be if he gets on tonight.

FFS already... Did they even look at that as potentially offside?

Soucek,Bowen and Kudus outstanding tonight,Mav was excellent again, and Ant put in a proper shift for the first 60 mins.JWP gone from a baller to a chaser, don’t think he touched the ball from the 45 to the 75th minute.Pac was poor second half.
Madison dictated the pace of the game, glad to see him come off.

Do you think Ings could have come on for Antonio for the last 30 mins?

Disappointing game, dreadful finishing (both sides) & Moyes no-sub idiocy again when players were cleared fked.

Stupid late KO, depressing shuffle in the rain to Stratford to be meet by a ste train service = cab back from Shenfield.

Yes we all said that,he’s not the same type of player obviously but Ant was done by 65. Think Ings would have enabled us to keep the ball a bit better in the latter stages and allow kudus and Bowen to go past him, that’s no criticism of Ant he’d given everything.

Funnily enough I enjoyed the game,no VAR at any time, the tetchiness between Madison and Pac, some mad five minute spells, some clever football at times, plenty of passion and a draw probably fair.
Absolutely agree on coming out though, seemed worse than ever getting to the station, prob because most stayed to the end.
Worse bit was the bloody half time music again.

At least you didn’t have to get a cab to Waterloo, then a train, and then another cab laugh only just hanging my waterproofs up in the utility room now (albeit after cracking open a can after I got home) biggrin
