He did well but Chelsea's defence were a little tired AND were sitting back a bit when he came on so he had more of an impact than he may have done if he'd started. He's not seemed quite so dynamic and hungry for the ball as that the last few times he's started. Also, I fear there might have been a little more effort than normal due to the 'shop-window' effect because I can't imagine he's satisfied with his bench warming role even when the big two are injured.
He's been woeful when he's started ,so no suprise there.Athlon said:
What we need is a leader that had a plan and backbone and Moyes is failing on both counts.
Pick a starting squad and work them, if there are holes they will show and changes can be made.
we need to play free flowing football, where we look and act scared, these are players that were full of life and confidence last year and the only thing that has changed is the the non playing staff.
Sadly Moyes' idea of how to play the game is worlds away from what we are famous for.
And yes I live in Manchester (1.5 miles from O.T.) and have supported the team since my dad took me to see Best Charlton and Law play (dennis' kids were in my class so we had an awesome football coach!)
Best post I've seen on here for a while, spot on.Pick a starting squad and work them, if there are holes they will show and changes can be made.

Your problems are three-fold.
1. Owners who have little value left in America, and have been milking the club for a long time to pay for their massively leveraged take over.
2. A squad that isn't far off the level that we (LFC) had when Hodgson was sacked. A couple of world class players, a couple of CL quality players, but the rest are mid-table.
3. A manager that doesn't know how to get the dressing room on his side, can't display any consistency and doesn't know how to play free flowing, attacking football.
Sack Moyes if you want, but that won't replace the crud in your team. There are very, very few managers in the world that I think could get you into the top three. I don't think even SAF could win you the league again tbh, now that City have stepped up a gear.
Replace all the crud in your team if you want, but that isn't going to get your manager to suddenly start playing the Utd way of the late 90s!
You need to do both and that's going to cost a massive amount of money. Money that the Glazers don't have and wouldn't spend even if they did!
Depressing as it maybe to hear, but I can't see either Moyes or the Glazers being in charge by the time Utd next win the league or CL.

In my opinion we are playing a formation which doesnt help us at all, with most other top eight teams playing variations of a 4231, when we are playing a 4411. This leaves our defence open to the attacking four players of the opposition, while their two defensive midfielders are stopping us getting forward. If we played with De Gea, Rafael, Vidic, Smalling/Jones, Evra, Carrick, Fletcher, Kagawa, Januzaj, Rooney, Van Persie, I think we would do much better. Playing that formation we would only really need a central midfielder, and a new left back, as I think Evra is too attacking and not quick enough to get back. Obviously Moyes doesnt notice these issues though as he seems intent on playing his way ![rolleyes](/inc/images/rolleyes.gif)

We played a 4231 against Swansea with Fletch/Carrick...Januzaj/Kagawa/Valencia...Danny
It worked really really well.....then he brings Young back and goes 442 against Chelsea
Confuses the s

What's this free flowing football you ate talking about? We haven't played like that for 3 years at least.
Take rvp out of the team last season and we'd be in the same situation we are now.
I thought at start of season we needed 4 players who could come straight into team, now I actually think its about 7.

RVP being injured may well be a blessing. Shows the paucity of the squad for what it is. Otherwise he may have played a blinder and scored enough to put you in the top 4. Take rvp out of the team last season and we'd be in the same situation we are now.

I have no doubt given some of the chances we aren't converting with a fit rvp we'd be top 4,but you're right in that it would conceal the deficiencies. The stat about rooney and rvp playing together vs when 1 or neither plays is startling.

Shows how much we've been carried by them over the past few years.
Very true. These are difficult times and there is no shortage of gleeful ABUs writing the club off. In some cases for good.
Only time will tell, but do not give up on the greatest football club in the world just yet.
I never will.
Funny old game, football.

Think the only thing about that is that we really don't know how fit/strong Fletcher is yet & whether he was in shape to start on Sunday. As to Kagawa, the only place he was going to start was on the left (again!) instead of Young (and we know how good he is out there).

Agree on Fletcher but then surely the simple option is a straight swap with Jones, the team then still know what everyones roles are and they can build some confidence/understandingAs to Kagawa, the only place he was going to start was on the left (again!) instead of Young (and we know how good he is out there).
Honestly I think 4th is done and gone, we can cope with one season out but the summer things need to change, the Glazers need to back Moyes in a big way or move him on and if they aren't willing to spend then they need to go themselves
