Matt Macey is a decent understudy.
Though it seems he is on his way going by the rumours. He does seem like a good number 2 though. I'd be pretty happy with Leno and Macey. Is Dejan Illiev still around? I like the idea of a strong number one (and let's not forget that Leno is one of the best in the league - despite Martinez's great form last season!) and backup that has risen through the youth ranks. Seems a nice balance. Just that one midfielder away now - unless that is it and Guendouzi will be reintegrated. ....
Sad to see Martinez go, although he only played I think 12 first team games for us, he never let us down and has the physical presence especially at corners that Leno doesn't seem to have. I've would rather see Kolasinac, Mustafi, Ozil, Sokratis, Torreira let go/sold to balance the books.
Don't get wrong I think Leno is a very good goalkeeper but I think last season in the Premier league he made 7 errors that led to goals, only De Gea made more errors. I can't name the Premier league games but do remember the Europa league game against Olympiakos when it was 1-1 in extra time (2-1 agg) he should of just booted the ball up field, but instead he tried to dribble the ball around the attacking player and conceded the corner of which they scored from.
Yes Luiz should of attacked the ball that was floated in that Olympiakos scored from and Aubameyang should have scored the winner at the death, but if Leno would of cleared it like he should have we wouldn't have to relie on Luiz heading the ball away and/or Aubameyang scoring a winning goal for us.

Outright shot stopping was never Leno’s problem, he just doesn’t command the box on crosses and corners, there was a noticeable change immediately Martinez came in and it affected the defenders performances too which was a big part of the improvement when he played.
I think Martinez also better suited the 'Pep style' which Arteta will follow, so I'm surprised he's gone really, I was expecting him to get more share of the play this season dovetailing with Leno, so I think its a shame he's gone.I think the above it highlights a problem in our team management, because you are all right about both keepers but even teams like Burnley can keep two decent keepers happy.
If anything last season proved you need two good keepers on the books.
Our club was big enough for both now we need to go and find a replacement who may not be as good.
Does any other team pay their number two goaly £75k a week? He’s had a huge pay cheque waved under his nose so unsurprising he chose to go and play considerably more games, think we were paying him what, £20k?
Yes I think we should have pushed the boat out and kept him, perhaps gave him the FA Cup games and whatever they’re calling the league cup currently and perhaps a percentage of league games with Leno doing the majority of league and Europe games.
We don’t know what’s gone on in the background though so it’s hard to be Completely subjective.

Cmon, getting 20m for Martinez was an absolute no brainer. If anything last season proved you need two good keepers on the books.

It's only a no brainer if the replacement is equal to Martinez. If the replacement is not equal or better than Martinez then we have just weakened our squad, lets see who the replacement is before calling it a good deal
Life long Gooner here. Didn’t know this thread existed on Pistonheads
Very happy with Auba signing but disappointed with the Martinez sale. I preferred him to Leno to be honest. Hope his sale does not lead to complacency from Leno as he may view it as less competition for the keeper slot. Need to get rid of some deadwood but doubt there is much interest for those players.
