Pretty much. Easy to get checked as it shows under diagnostics. Sensor is about £40, 10 mins to fit. Even if you took it to a dealer, there's no reason you couldn't sort it.
Mine pulsed due to the switch flicking on/off as I was going along.
Also try getting the front 02 sensor checked. Mines slow to react and can cause a 'lag' in performance.

Right chaps, my NSR shocker has developed a rather large leak and needs replacing.
Im now unsure of what to do.
KYB shocks? Coilovers? just do the one/the pair/the whole car?
Budget isn't massive so open to suggestions.
I know Camskill do the shocks, but would saloon stuff fit? worth looking for STi stuff?

help please hehe

Always replace both otherwise it's very possible you'll have unbalanced ride. If one shock is firmer than the other, or slightly different height it will play havoc with the handling. Go for dampers, much nicer on UK roads than coilovers. Good opportunity to lower the back end by 20-30mm with new set of shorter springs to go with the KYB's unless they come with springs already.

I always thought this but i recently had to replace front ns strut on swmbo's 90000mile MY00 wagon as it was knocking. Was happy to pay for a pair but garage said to try it with one.. Car balance is as good as ever.

Something else, I owned a MY00 from near new. When a mate fancied one we test drove a nigh on 100k but still standard example and it's chassis was noticeably tighter than mine. Suspension on Subaru's seem to hold up quite well in my experience.

I had read somewhere that the KYBs don't like lowered springs, though you wouldn't think 30mm would do much harm?

I've been in a similar quandry - coilovers for Imprezas are A) Expensive and B) Usually very hard.

This pair seem to offer the lowest spring rates I have found (linked GC8 models as thats what I have)

Daiyama - £650

Of course, the more adjustment you have, the more complicated everything gets, and those have plenty of adjustment options!

A more basic set up is this

Teins - £684

Much more basic, and possibly better for it!

Obviously, both sets are nearly twice as much as a set of KYBs and lowering springs.

I have a slight hesitation at say 70mph+, it seems to hesitate and then picks up then hesite and then pick up etc etc, doesn't happen at lower speeds or at least isnt as noticable.
Worth checking and cleaning the MAF.

I previously had KYBs and Eibach Pro Street springs on a GC8. Would recommend.

Good news then. Gonna have to get mine done if I'm going to keep the car. I've just bought a Golf which is distracting me slightly though!

Thoughts on these? My Aussie mate seems to think they should be ok. Über cheap as well

I've asked for spring rates.

They look OK. Would I be correct in thinking these will fit a GC8 by using the GC8 top mounts? Sure I read that somewhere. Could anybody who has any experience of such things comment?

Edit

Probably not, seeing as they don't use stock top mounts?

You did well then. More often than not the difference is noticeable. smile

I completely agree. It done about 2k since and despite steering, handling, braking still being spot on psrt of me still expects the 'difference' to show up. The garage who did it weren't at all surprised.

Ah that's interesting Batty - why are you flogging? I have a similar story to you in that I bought a cheap Wagon with morettes last May and have really enjoyed it since day one, actually I have this thread to thank for fixing the only niggle I had with it, hesitation through the revs noticeable in the higher gears, turned out to be the neutral position switch biggrin.

Anywho I'm now thinking of selling up in the near future too as I fancy something that's more of an emerging classic, been looking at S2s but wondering if I may regret it in terms of the dynamics of the drive.....

Well i like change mainly, and the cheapness of the interior grates slightly.
Mine has now had a pair of shocks, a new front 02 sensor and an aircon tensioner.
Will also be tracked twice over the next few months to earn its keep hehe
Glad the thread helped, I find forum posts extremely useful to diagnose faults so like to contribute to any knowledge i find smile

Yeah thread was a great help as the hesitation thing was the only head scratcher really. I had a lamda sensor pop out of the exhaust on a long trip during a move from Hampshire to Devon (garage just welded it back in as they said it was operating well....!) and the auxiliary belt went as well but the car had only done 3k miles in 3 years when I bought it so probably just some corrosion/deterioration causing those issues. Aside from that everything else has been service stuff, she runs and pulls like a train now!!

I think I have a similar disease to you in that part of the reason I want to sell up is that I fancy a change but they're difficult things to replace being so capable and all. Actually had an epic winter drive from rural Devon to Gatwick in the snow in January and the Scoob just took it in its stride! So another option could just be to tickle the engine, upgrade the handling and add some spangly wheels (maybe some Rotas of some kind smokin)... not sure to be honest as every time I take it out for a spirited drive I cross my mind.

Minimal exhaust/induction mods and a remap will transform the car in terms of go.

Put a decent set of pads in, SS braided brake hoses and quality brake fluid for a firmer pedal, and even with factory discs it will stop well.

Some thicker/stiffer rear ARB bushes and solid ARB drop links all round will take some of the softness, roll and squat on take off out of the handling. For the price of some relatively cheap mods you have a very different car that will be pretty much all you need for a very quick and pretty reasonable handling daily driver.

Out of the box i personally think they are head and shoulders above a lot of performance cars but with just a few well thought out changes they become different animals.

See this is what I'm thinking - could fork out for an older S2 and enjoy the chunkier build and classic Germanic looks but will I always be wishing it drove more like the Scoob..... Quite probably. Out of the box I think the WRX is a great motor and the suspension is just right for the terrible roads in the Devon countryside but I'm looking to move back to Hampshire/Dorset way so better roads could allow for a firmer setup on the car.

I don't know a hell of a lot about Scoobs so if I do decide to keep hold of the old girl then I'll be back in here for advice on setup - I'll have to sort a thread out to share my scoob ownership experience thus far, here's a piccie of mine when it was on winters (I have some gold wheels with summer rubber) in the meantime;

Remap wise I heard Engine Tuner in Plymouth are a good shout in Devon?... Sorry for the thread hijack Batty!
