I think the 2.5 from 2006 had equal length headers or some other subtle exhaust change which substantially muted the Subaru Burble. Twin scroll turbos also do this I believe.

Getting it back without it sounding like saturday night in a McDonalds carpark may not be cheap or easy. A Manifold swap is non-trivial on these cars.

2004-2005 2.0's have the burble you're after.
Odd. Mine is an 02 and burbles rather nicely.

I was wrong about the unequal length headers apparently, I know that at some point they changed the manifold design and it killed the subaru burble.
Obvuiously, classics, bugs and blobs all burble with the best of them.

Good thank you. I am getting used to the hard clutch and the brakes. Gave it a good test on the M1 on the way home smile

If you get any juddering from the clutch from time to time on gentle take off just find somewhere quiet and do a couple of full bore standing starts. That usually clears things for a while.

If you do a lot of town driving you generally get some judder. It's just one of those characteristic things with scoobs but nothing bad.

Good luck with your new ownership. I hope you'll both be very happy together. thumbup

A couple of questions after a couple of days of driving smile

In my old car when I put the key in the ignition I turned it 2 clicks then had to wait for some lights to go out before I could start it up. In this if I pause for even a moment it seems the immobiliser kicks in so the engine won't start - presumably that's right I just need to adjust my routine.

I am struggling to get any decent noise to come out of the speakers, even though I've messed with all the balances it still sounds tinny.

If i unlock the car remotely via the keyfob/key and get in it starts straight away. If you leave it 30secs the immobiliser kicks in.

If so, make sure your ignition is on and press the unlock button on the keyfob/key and it knocks the immobiliser off so you can start.

Sadly, the speakers in Imprezas do sound really tinny. They're badly mounted and poorly isolated.

Try settings of 'bass+2' and 'treble -1' as a stop gap.

Really, the answer is to get a car audio shop to upgrade the speakers (£100 ish +fitting) and whilst they are inside the drivers doors get the door skins dynamatted or some other sound deadening applied to firm them up and make the whole door a more effective enclosure.

I went from a Kenwood head unit to a top of the range Pioneer one and that made a big improvement, the car already has Infinity speakers (which I wouldn't recommen - their sharp treble makes the tinnyness worse).

is your audio system all standard?

The standard headunit is the bottleneck. Replace that with a good Alpine and you'll be amazed at the difference. Best £120 I spent on my STI.

I would guess it's all standard yes. I haven't even worked out if I have a multichanger or just one CD space yet. I think I will have to get the speakers upgraded as my first job.

I replaced the ICE in my Surf with a Pioneer Bluetooth unit, Aux and USB connections in the front panel as well. Works really well with Alpine in the front and and JBL speakers in the rear, all from Halfrauds and easy to fit yourself.

They do a nice Alpine double-din unit with Bluetooth for £170 or for a bit more get a touch screen unit.

You could just get a blanking unit instead that blanks off the bottom half of the double-din space in the dash so you can fit a standard single-din unit.

Lots of options.

Can I just upgrade the speakers and not the radio/cd etc? I'm new to this so sorry if that's a stupid question!
Also will Halfords fit the speakers or do I need to look around for a place to do them? It's not something I'm comfortable doing myself.
Got my first compliment on the car this morning from the guy in the petrol station smile

Yes you can, although I believe they may need some form of adapter to get them to fit the doors (front).

You could just change the speakers but the standard ICE isn't very good anyway. A set of decent speakers might not improve things significantly and my guess is changing the factory ICE for a nice new modern unit would be the way to go but then it's not my money so it's all down to how much of a budget you actually have or are willing to spend either way.

So it's best to change the speakers and the radio unit? I can't just replace one or the other?
Budget is minimal. I'm wary that the MOT is due in November so I'll get it serviced then too.

It's purely down to yourself.

At the end of the day you know what you can afford and what your priorities are. If it happens to be just a set of speakers right now then that's what it should be.

All i'm saying is that the ICE units themselves aren't great and well worthy of replacement but when and how is a matter of personal choice and circumstances.

Anyone else find their digital clock gains like mad? Both of our Scoobys have done this and I think we allow 5 mins at least usually!
