Timing drift

My 2 liter diesel Subaru legacy Refuses to run when cold Force to keep the revs up until the engine is warm The local dealership has diagnosed Timing drift And have quartered 3000 pounds to fit new chain Can do it myself for 300 pound But my question is has anybody else experienced timing drift Or should I be looking elsewhere
