My Bugeye wagon wrx 'shed'
Discussion
As in readers rides, here is my new winter (and track) toy.
It's a stock wrx, with fssh, 125k and recently had a cambelt.
The bodywork needs tlc, but it drives very tight.
I've a few questions to ask as this is my first Subaru:
She pulls well, but has a very slight hesitation through the rev range.
The air filter will need replacing, but is the maf likely to be failing? She idles steady as a rock.
The brakes are rubbish, what are the best pads to use for road/track?
Remaps: obviously at 125k I'm not going to be chasing big power, but how is a stage 1 best approached? Decent panel filter, a cat delete and a chip/piggyback?
Cheers chaps
Matt

Cheers fella! Can I just 'gut' the cats, or are decats cheap enough (not yet looked!)
It does have a scorpion back box, would a remap require a full cat back?
I presume a k&n style panel is all that's required?
Where is best/local to Bristol for the remap?
Sorry for all the questions! Very much enjoying her!

Right, im slowly working through the car, and still not having any luck solving the hesitation. MPG is rather poor as well, but i assume thats short journeys.
I'm borrowing a scangauge, but no CEL lights have ever popped up.
She even seems 'lumpy' on WOT.
i've done the air filter and petrol filter, and cleaned the MAF (it goes to cut out if i unplug it).
The boost solenoid is next on the agenda.
Shes very grumpy below 2k rpms, almost missing.
Ive also come acquired a Roger Clark lightened flywheel, what should i expect to change the clutch/flywheel? Not sure its worth the hassel at this stage?

You need to see a Subaru specialist to have a look at your lumpy idle and hesitation. Could just be something and nothing. Before you fit any lightened flywheels get your engine issues sorted first.
As for your lightened flywheel....So long as it's not one of the really light ones it shouldn't affect idle too much, maybe not at all. If they are too light they can give a lumpy idle and you have to have the idle turned up a little bit so it idles smoother and doesn't cut out.
Any suggestions in and near Bristol/Bath?As for your lightened flywheel....So long as it's not one of the really light ones it shouldn't affect idle too much, maybe not at all. Right, an update for those who are interested.
Cars been very good except this small hesitation. My DIY mechanics could only go so far, so was given to a specialist.
First off he said the car was in excellent shape, driving with less knocks than cars half it's milage.
It pulls rather too well to be bone stock, so a suspected mild map is lurking somewhere perhaps (no evidence to prove, could be just very healthy!). A very cheap fuel regulator has been grafted on, which will be binned, and checks on the neutral switch and timing are being undertaken (last belt done at. Hi-Q so slightly concerned on belt quality, tensioner and timing!)
It's returning mid to high 200's to £70 and using no oil or water. Bottom rad hose, rad and the expensive posh 02 sensor have all been replaced recently which is a good sign.
Rear pads are stuck/seized so will be addressed and then once in A1 condition I'll be looking at a stage 1 map (up and downpipe decat, cotton filter, fuel pump for peace of mind and remap)
Love the car, and looking forward to putting more miles on it. Best £2k I've spent.

That sort of MPG sounds about right - I got 90 miles out of £20 today, on a gentle (ish) to St Austell and back, from Plymouth (Classic Wagon).
Could the hesitation be the boost solenoid playing up? I think mine needs changing, it surges from time to time. Or it could be the MAF, or, or ,or.........
Yours does look good, I have to say.
yeah it does seem that way. It being taken out with a diagnostic machine plugged in with its 'live' data being recorded. Although quite basic, the data should give a few pointers. I've systematically gone through the car, so shouldn't be much left to change (he hopes!). Could the hesitation be the boost solenoid playing up? Was glad it was given a clean bill of health, I think I'm going to keep it till its dead now anyway, as it owes me so little.

A good buy! I like it.
Apologies if I missed it - but did you get a price for a custom remap and panel filter?
Not got that far yet i'm afraid. Just getting her to run 100% before i 'play'.Apologies if I missed it - but did you get a price for a custom remap and panel filter?
Just had a note from the specialist mentioning tensioners at over £170 . Fingers crossed all is well, as the belt alone is another £110.
Further updates:
Lightweight pulley (minus bolt)
Timing there of nowhere abouts.
So all in all, proof if proof where needed of the quality of Kwik-Q style garages.
New belt, tensioners and new fuel reggy cam in at around 300 all in. Not bad at all really, but still could have done without it

More details for those who have a hesitating scooby, and want to add a few more items to check on the list is.....
the neutral switch. Mine was FUBAR. limits the ECU and power (more so on STI's as it removes the AVCS or V-tec or whatever it is )
£40 for the part and 15mins to fit if you have girlie hands like me
Does play havoc apparently.
The car should feel like a new car when i get it back
