Hi,

Thinking of selling my M3 and getting another Impreza STi next year, and having had a 2005 car which I regard as the best new-age, I can't help consider the age and the fact that it getting hard to get a lower mileage example. Therefore I have started to consider a late Hawkeye.

I have driven a Hawkeye, but it was only a short run so I didn't really derive a thorough conclusion, other than the fact that it didn't rev as hard as the 2.0ltr.

I would have funds for a remap, exhaust and the usual stage 1/2 modifications...

Thoughts or opinions?

Thanks

Apart from the gearbox, which is miles better, I'm not a fan.

JDM twin scroll or Spec C Blob for me please.
Anything specific?

I dislike the 2.5, in its standard form it will do 400bhp max, even at that it will probably break. Don't like the way they drive either.
I would probably be fairly conservative (350bhp) and if I went beyond that could a rebuild be an option!?

Yes, but you might has well start with a 2.0, no rebuild needed
I guess, however, I was just thinking about age and mileage as I will use it quite a bit. Perhaps that's a non-issue given the reliability.

Whats the budget? The hatchbacks look tempting money these days.

Don`t fancy an evo? I guess an impreza should be less costly to maintain.
Probably 14-15K tops including mods (I have to free up some cash, unless I want to get in trouble for swapping cars again).

Hmmmm, Evo...

Find a forged RB320 or a JDM Hawkeye. They'd be the only ones I'd look at, Paul.
I'll be honest, I can't see the 5K or so mark up on the RB320's, but then I've never been a fan of special edition Imprezas. They always seemed to offer little performance wise over the PPP pack, which as we know is a handful of simple mods.

I will have a look at the Jap imports, as I had not thought of that. Don't be JDM's lose the burble? If so, can I put some unequal headers on it, or will that break something?

At the risk of getting flamed, my eyes have wandered to a Focus RS! Good residuals, good fun, reasonable interior and some cracking low mile examples available...

I looked at one too. Then I realised it's overpriced by about £5k. Nice cars but the prices are artificial and I don't think they're much good on anything other than a perfect road surface. I'd rather source a late Type-25.
I'm going to test drive one and see. I will report back!

So?
I never made a test drive. My O/H talked me out of it and told me if anything I needed another Subaru! Its a damn shame the new hatchbacks have engine issues frown

So, I test drove a white Focus RS today... There's no denying its quick, and it certainly feels quicker than what the official figures suggest. However, and there was always going to be a 'however' with a 300bhp front wheel drive car - wheel spin and torque steer! In 1st and 2nd it desperatly struggles to put the power down and that was in the dry, albeit cold, and the torque steer is there, sure, not as bad as the MK1 RS, but its there and really noticeable. Despite these faults, it ridiculously urgent, comical to chuck about and the power is easily accessible, with 3rd gear being the place to be once you're off.

The exterior up close is woeful. The vacuum formed plastic bits on the bonnet and side look like something made in a year 6 design and technology class. The white really shows this up badly, however, the blue, of which there was one one the forecourt looks no where near as bad.

The interior is laughable, and that's with my Subaru glasses on. The combined sat nav/radio must have been supplied by Matsui or Radio Shack, and the Carbon Fibre splattered everywhere just looks cheap and unnecessary. The driving position is reasonable if a little high, and the seats are brilliant.

Lastly the noise - it's a bit of a mess. With the Scooby plus a channel tunnel exhaust its the exhaust you can hear and it's great. With my M3 its induction and engine you can hear, which again is great. However, in the RS its a messy blend of engine, induction, exhaust and a dump valve, which on paper should sound good, but in reality doesn't.

So, will I buy one? No... They are just too expensive for what they are, and with the new STi approaching you would be mad to part with 22K for a 4 year old car when a brand new STi could be had for 30K. Consider like for like second hand prices and its even more compelling to go with the Scooby.

I am not too sure to be honest but imagine it would be well inside your budget. The same car with 40-50k on it cost around 12k so imagine its not far off this. I can drop him a PM if you want?
That would be great if you could! Thanks...

Spoke to Dan and he said he is looking for 11k which sounds like a great price to me. If you want his number for a chat let me know and I will drop you a private message.;)
Cool. Drop me his number
