.....what is the star currently close to the Moon, and the particulary bright one low in the southern sky(Venus?)?

Thanks Eric and thanks TH. I know they're not stars as such. Just using the general term.

I've always been fascinated by the night sky but have never lived anywhere suitable to do any proper viewing. I should do so now out in the country a bit.

Wow! I've just looked at Jupiter through my old 10x50 Miranda binocs and I can indeed see the two moons! That's a first for me, thank you Eric.

I've ordered a pair of Celestron Skymaster 25x70 binoculars. they should arrive tomorrow. I'll now spend some time becoming familiar with what's what amongst the constellations to get the best out of them.

Thanks Nelly, I'll see if they will attach to my camera tripod. Otherwise I'll buy one.

Well so far looking through the 25x70 bins I see slightly bigger stars wink However Jupiter's moons are quite clear now.

I'm looking forward to Stargazing Live tonight.
