Yep this was 'that' off. Unfortunately the car was a total loss.

First piece of road furniture was a three legged junction sign, set that one on fire as well though.

The lamp post is a biggy, dual carriageway style. Took it out of the ground (all 6ft that was below the ground! ) Then dragged it 10-12ft up the road. It was stuck in the car when they tried to put the car on the low loader.... Would have hidfden it but was a little large for that.

Typical approved lamp column and fitting to Herts CC approval is around £453 + vat inc installation and painting (which HCC insist on).

Typical galvanised column can be yours for around £250.

I've never seen a streetlight column as cheap as £100 and the ones at £1200 are a rip-off.

Priced correct in July 2004.

Yeah, how DID you manage that?! What car were you in?

Edit: Is anyone else visualising a scene of utter devastation?!

P.S Hope no-one was hurt though..

To keep you all from guessing, it was a lovely dark blue Cerbie, and it was coming off a roundabout IIRC. I'm sure Ridds will fill you in on the details, as I got the story second-hand via the recovery chaps. I saw the results at the recovery depot as I cleared out my Griff following my own off (on the same day).

FYI!

I hit a lampost in my old car. It was completely undamaged (the post, not the car) Warwickshire CC charged me £70 call out fee.

Man 1: "What do you think?"

Man 2: "Looks alright to me"

WCC: "£70 please"

There's not as much work in replacing a lamp-post as you think.

The costs spiral when the local Council monkeys do the work cos they're a bunch of lazy gits.

Me and 2 labourers have replaced 4 complete columns in a day and still been home before 3 pm

I reckon we could do 1 for £4 - 500 and still make a healthy profit for the firm.

Don't forget, with local council types you have 20 tea-breaks to pay for.....

Not to mention parking the van up on a verge and reading magazines for 5 hours, doing a bit of work on the side privately and then sloping home early.

Which is why I hate taxes.

When are we going to get those safer deformable lamposts then? They can't cost more than 1200 quid and at least they'd save more lives than the speed cameras.

I don't know how much a lamp post is but a concrete bus stop has recently cost my best friend five weeks in Intensive Care and god knows how long in the spinal unit...

It was one of the last concrete bus stops left on the Isle of Wight. No bill so far.

Slippery, Icy road that had just been gritted, cold tyres etc etc.

Was straightlining though the roundabout and there was a couple of depressions that unweighted the rear of the car. Slid up the road about 50m and luckily the lamppost stopped me the car and my passenger heading off the cliff edge! phew... First date with my current girlfriend and she's still with me now! lol

Shame was a really nice car.

Saw your Griff julian, rammed from behind wasn't it? Looked like a lot of damage. Real shame, is she back on the road?

If only!

Overtaking at about 30-35 MPH on the A27 southbound, just south of the Coldean Lane junction. Similar road conditions (it was raining), fraction too much throttle as I started to turn and it all went pearshaped so quickly the next thing I knew I was heading backwards into the nearside kerb. Took the front off with one tree, which thankfully span me a little further round so I hit the next tree square on with the rear, rather than taking the full impact with the driver's door.

Car was totally fkered, chassis twisted (even my seatframe was twisted!), every panel bar the bonnet and n/s door trashed, somehow the bootlid got wedged fully between the tree and rear of the car. In short I was extremely lucky to walk away with a bit of a sore back. It could very easily have ended with my (depressingly short) obituary.

Still, we live and learn, eh?

Plenty of tuition due before my next RWD purchase, and I've a rather nice EsCos Monte lined up as soon as I'm earning proper money again. Might pop along to a SMCC meet when it's sorted. What are you driving now?
