Pigeon, why compare the GT with an SSK anyway? shouldnt the bottom pic be a blown 4 1/2, or an 8 litre?

You see the same sort of thing on ferraris and other italian exotica associated with power. I don't care to much about the cosmetics. I hate covers though. I appreciate the marvels inside the engine. So long as it's not to ugly I may like it, if it's a marvel inside. Now a tractor engine or something that looks like that isn't quite my bag although I can apreciate the fact that it's been hand crafted and fettled.

When I see it it screams Volkswagen at me... not even Audi! VW should have the badge on the front. I'd personally drive it with any badge on the front but it doesn't look like a bentley.

I've seen the same one on 3 different occasions, silver example I think, oddly enough all of those occasions have had it on the back of a flatbed trailer on the 215 freeway by UC Riverside... maybe the owner wants to keep the miles down that way anyways that image doesn't do much to discourage the old british car reliability myths in america...

I do agree that it's a shame seeing a VW product in that engine bay. It would have been better if there was something british built then we could have been proud of and if it had polished areas then that would have been a bonus.

I think the GT looks greak. Imposing and comfy. Im not in the market for that sort of car at the moment but i would consider one if I was. At least the design is creating discussion.

I agree. I had a good look around & inside one at a car show last weekend and I have to say that I like it.

Whether it's worth £120,000 is another matter as I'm not likely to spend that on a car. In all honesty the car isn't a lot more opulant that a top end Jaguar (which is half the money), but then neither is an Aston.

Tt was about time that Bentley's styling moved onwards. Even Bentley knew that 10 years ago, which is why they built the Java concept car which got rave reviews at he time, and which the Conti GT drawa a lot of inspration from.

I don't think it's fair to criticise the car because "it's not British" and VW styled it because:

a) VW also "styled" the current Lamborghini range - but no-one's complaining about those are they?

b) Ferrari is owned by Fiat, and Aston Martin and Jaguar are owned by Ford. Oh... and TVR is now owned by a Russian

I think it is,

Fiat is italian.. like Ferrari.

The present Lambourgini range has lost its magic as far as i'm concerned.

Both Aston Martin and ford also come under fire from me. It does'nt matter who owns the company. Its about who designs and builds the car components. In that case is Ford. Ford Engines, Ford Switchgear etc. If i'm spendind 100K on a car i don't want mondeo switchgear or two V6 mondeo engines bolted together. I want bespoke.

It has VW engine which is just plain wrong, it is based on a VW Phaeton.

However a Ferrari is a Ferrari, and a TVR is TVR.

And before anyone points it out, i know Ferrari use Fita switch gear, but at least they build thier own engines!

I would rather have an Arnage T. Now that is a proper Bentley.

Ah, but you have to be aged over 75 to own an Arnage.

The Continental GT gives new retirees the chance to own a Bentley straight away.

No. Guff. Too small, not enough chrome. And I saw one in tesco's car park the other week. You just shouldn't see bentleys in tescos.

Was that a blue one in the Tesco's at Gillette Corner?
If so that was me borrowing P1's for the weekend.
I only chose it because we had a wedding to go to and both the Vanquish and DB9 were booked.

I thought it was a lovely cruiser, very wafty and quite fast with an amazing engine note. I personally preferred the engine to the Arnage T's as it can lug AND rev if required.

But there is very limited rear seat space and it can't corner without lots of protest from the front tyres; not a sporty car at all.

For my money I would probably have a DB9 although the interior is nowhere near as relaxing or well built as the Bentley.

Irrespective of its pro's and cons, whether the back looks right or not, whether it looks like a Rover 75 or not, it is a car in its own right, and many people will love it, many will hate it.

But in judging it, judge it in isolation or in terms of VW's previous achievements. Sure it has a lot going for it and maybe that is enough to make it a success in it's own right.

Why VW didnt make and brand it as a VW is beyond me........the car may have Bentley style here and there but it lacks the Bentley substance.

Simply putting the badge on the front dont make it a Bentley, no more so than putting Turbo stickers on a Ford Fiesta make it a Turbo.

So if you are happy with simply a Bentley-style car, fine its for you then.

If you want Bentley-substance you will need to look elsewhere.

Ownership is irrelevant surely.

It is the approach to style, concept and design that defines if the car is British, Italian etc.

Saw a GT on Saturday in Essex, the location sort of suited it i thought
Then on my way home I say a 'new' Arnage, YIKES, what have they done to the front end??
This was one of my all time dream cars, more presence than you can shake a stick at, loads of old money charm, and a great sense of manace, a truely awesome car, but now, with that new GT esque front end, looks a bit like a body kitted Marina or something.

What is happening to Benley? I don't know and I don't like it.
