Are you staying long ??

Stratford is a nice place for a few days

If it's a few days you could consider a trip on the canals, I found a few places doing weekend hire when I was googling for Coventry Pie

there is nothing in or near coventry worth seeing.I was at Uni there for a year and it really is a hell hole. Think "why do people say sent to Coventry!......" Should you go out in the evening, avoid "Mr G's" and "The Collouseum". The Planet is the Uni bar/nightclub/entertainment place and the only one where an all out riot is not a certainty....

.. must get out some Specials records tonight!.......

Stratford is a lovely place to visit.

Or, for excellent train links you could try Birmingham. Now stop laughing. Honestly, there's loads to do, and the area round the canal has got lots of bars/cafes etc. I never thought I'd say it, but its really quite smart. And there's lots of shops too !!

Lois, the Germans bombed the shit out of Coventry and it was rebuilt by socialists. Need I say more?

Lois, I have the misfortune of living in Coventry at the moment ( but understandably when people ask I say I'm from London). The worst aspect of here is living here and the bitter-lazy-chavtastic attitude of many of the people here. The kind of people who left school at 14 and got married at 15 perhaps having kids-no jobs, and then staring at me with hatred for driving a Porsche, working hard and having dark skin (while my tax money sustains them)! Anyway, you're not about to live here and neither are you darker skinned!

The Transport museum is worth seeing, and Coventry, to be fair to it, has gotten a little better.
It's definately worth seeing the historic Cathedral with its roof blown off in WW2- near the centre/Cov Uni. I'm a big fan of historic architechture.

The Ibis hotel is near where I work- at Jaguar Whitley- I think it's ok. I'd love to get you a tour round the Whitley plant, but I don't think that would be allowed. The Browns lane plant-the museum display part- with the historic cars is well worth seeing (and is permitted) and has some lovely classic Jags, including the XJ13.
Depending on how long you stay- it could be worth seeing Warwick Castle- in Warwick and also the ruins of Kenilworth Castle. Warwick University Campus is also very nice and friendly, and the arts centre usually has some offbeat films on.

Give me a shout offline if you need some help with hotels and other stuff.

Coventry - the only place where anything bad has happened to the Saab, some prize tit jumped across the bonnet leaving two craters in it

Coventry isn't much of a place. Noble, Ultima and Triumph are based up the road and I'm sure wouldn't mind you looking around, Triumph used to have a really good factory tour which I'm sure is still going. Bruntingthorpe isn't far away either and I reckon I owe you a drive of the Saab in return for the the Horse tips a while back so you might as well take it around Brunters.

Just to echo what others said:

Warwick
Leamington Spa
Stratford-upon-Avon

All worth a visit. Rail links are pretty good at all of them. As already said there's plenty to do in Brum too.

Some lovely roads as well if you are in the car - Warwick/Stratford Roads (A4141/A34) as well as the Old Warwick Road (A4177)

Christ, is that place still going? I went there once in my student days, never again...

I've heard that the revolving burger bar is no more - shame, it added a little style to the place.

It's an amusing challenge when you remember where the only scamera on it is located...

I went to uni in Cov and yes, it's a dump, but I preferred living there to Milton bloody Keynes, where I am now. The Golden Cross was (is) always a decent Saturday night venue, near the Cathederal. You could get a bit of a kicking at some of the town centre night spots if you weren't careful (like in Blackpool...), but mostly it was fine for me for 5 years.

Stratford/Leamington/Warwick are far, far better places though. Given the choice, I'd go to one of those three.

Lois,

It sounded in your original post as if you might have had some sort of choice when going to Coventry.

If there is any element of choice whateoever then I recommend you exercise it - Coventry really is an excreble place, I cannot think of a single redeeming feature about it

Ok...well is there anyone roughly around that area thats nicer to visit. Just there worked out as a half way place to meet. Has to have a good train station though

Coventry is an unmitigated shithole. The best thing that ever happened in coventry was when the Jerries bombed it flat. Never ever go there. Ever. I have never been to a worse place, and I've been to Hull.

As has been mentioned before, Stratford, Warwick and Leamington are very nice places - Warwick castle is well worth a visit, and Stratford's pretty nice (grew up there), not a lot to do in Stratford though, unless the theatre's your bag of tricks... Leamington's Pump rooms are worth a visit, and Warwick town centre's a nice town centre.

Edited to remove the bit about the mop as you'll be going next month when it'll be fine.

I once left a job in Coventry to get one in Hull (Walsgrave to Hull Royal). Reason? - because Hull is nicer.

Whilst I worked in Coventry, I used to commute from my Dad's house near Stoke - meaning I had to get up at 5am & got home around 8-9pm, despite the offer of free accommodation in Coventry, because I wanted to be as far from the place as possible for as long as possible.

Bearing in mind that it was Stoke that I was going home to, I think this illustrates how bloody awful Coventry is.
